Jess joined Jasper on the bed, both of them shifting until they were in the middle.

Tony looked at Rhys and jerked his chin up, toward the opposite side of the bed. It spoke to the level of friendship they’d achieved that Rhys knew without words what Tony wanted him to do. Each of them moved, claiming a side of the bed, where they sat with their backs against the headboard, flanking Jasper and Jess.

“What are you doing?” Jess whispered, even as Jasper settled deeper into the pillow, his tears dry.

“Go to sleep, Jess.” Tony, who was next to Jasper, placed his large hand on top of the little boy’s head. Jasper looked at both him and Tony with such trust that Rhys’s chest tightened painfully.

“We’re here,” Tony said. “No one is going to hurt you or your mommy. Ever again.”

Jess frowned at the last, but her exhaustion rivaled Jasper’s, and within a few minutes, they were both sound asleep, looking more peaceful than Rhys had ever seen the pair, and he was suddenly determined to keep those expressions there.

That was when Rhys realized that Jess and Jasper had done the impossible in just two days.

They’d claimed his heart.
