He took her chin in his thumb and forefinger, pulling her face up to look at him fully. She flushed at the intense, sexy look on his face. Why did he have to be so freaking hot?

“I’m not giving you a chance to change your mind or back out.”

“Yeah?” Jasper said, walking into the room. Jess noticed his excited bounce from earlier was gone, and she knew she’d taken that away from him. Her sweet son had been through the wringer this past month. He was just a kid, a great kid, and he deserved so much better than the hell they’d been living in.

It was that realization that kicked her pride to the curb once and for all. Because there was no way on earth she was denying him this. This safe, loving home, where he’d be surrounded by good people.

“Grab your coat, buddy,” Jess said, rising.

Jasper’s shoulders fell. “Okay.”

“Jess,” Tony said, standing, his hands on his hips. He clearly thought she’d changed her mind.

“We need to get our things out of the car,” Jess added quickly.

“Our things?” Jasper asked.

Jess grinned. “Allour things. Tony and Rhys have invited us to move into the guest room. And I’ve accepted. We’re going to live here until we can afford a place of our own. Sound good?”

“We’re going to live here?!” Jasper shouted so loudly, Aunt Berta rushed into the room.

“What’s going on? Jasper, are you okay?” Aunt Berta asked.

“We’re going to live here!” he proclaimed, running over to hug Aunt Berta.

She laughed with delight. “Oh my word! That’s wonderful! I was hoping your mom would say yes,” Aunt Berta said, her gaze drifting to Jess. “Bought a cheesecake to celebrate, just in case.”

Jess smiled, fighting to blink back the tears suddenly blurring her vision. This was all too much, too wonderful. “Thank you. For everything.”

“Did Tony and Rhys ask you about me taking care of Jasper after school?”

Jess nodded. “Yes, and I insist on paying you.”

Aunt Berta waved her away, much like Tony had when she said she wanted to pay rent, but before she could persist, Jasper ran over to her.

“Aunt Berta is going to be my new babysitter?” he asked.

“Yes,” Jess replied.

Jasper, in true dramatic form, shouted, “This is the best day of my life!”

They all laughed, then Tony and Rhys helped her and Jasper move in, and all of them plowed through four homemade pizzas, before watchingToy Storytogether.

When Jess crawled into bed later that night, next to a sleeping Jasper, she whispered the same words. “Best day of my life.”
