“I have no idea what that is.”

Penny feigned a horrified gasp. “Ohmigod. It’s only the greatest true crime show. Plus, the whole time the host, Bailey, is talking about the murder, she’s putting on makeup. I swear one day I’m going to try her techniques and give myself a makeover.”

“Makeup and murder?” Jess said. “I have to admit that sounds kind of awesome.”

“So it’s a date. You and me.”

Jess nodded, thinking how nice the plan sounded, even if it would probably never happen. Days off with girlfriends weren’t something she saw in her immediate future.

“Here you go,” Aunt Berta said, walking in with a cake box, Jasper in tow, a half-eaten thick slice of home-baked bread and butter in his hand.

Penny stood up and tipped open the lid. Jess rose to look too.

“It’s red velvet.” Aunt Berta had created a masterpiece, the cake looking too good to eat, with fluffy cream cheese frosting and a crushed-pecans garnish.

“You’re the best!” Penny gushed. “Okay. I gotta go. It was really nice to meet you, Jess.”

“You too,” Jess said.

“Stay cool, Jasper,” Penny said, offering a fist bump.

Jasper giggled when their fists touched. “Okay, Penny.”

“I like her,” Jasper said after Penny left.

“So do I.”

It had certainly been an enlightening visit. From arch enemies to confirmed bachelors…Penny had given Jess a lot to think about.
