Somewhere along the line, Rhys had disposed of his condom. She’d been too distracted by Tony to see how or when. Tony slipped to Rhys’s bathroom to do the same.

She lay next to Rhys, who rolled over to face her. He kissed her, the touching of their lips light, soft.

“Okay?” he asked.

Her sweet, caring doctor.

Jess nodded. “So okay.”

He grinned. “Me too.”

Jess sat up when Tony reentered the room. She knew he was intent on joining them in the bed, but she couldn’t let him do that. If she did, she’d sink into the soft mattress, nestled between their hard bodies, and never leave.

“I can’t stay,” she whispered. She wanted to with all her heart, but cuddling with them would take the intimacy to yet another level. It was going to be hard enough to convince herself that this was just sex, that it didn’t mean anything.

And shehadto convince herself. It was the only way she’d come out of this on the other side without being completely shattered when they moved on to the next woman.

She prepared her arguments, afraid she might have to fight them. But she didn’t have to say a word—and that was when she realized after-sex cuddles probably weren’t part of their repertoire.

This was a casual affair.

Anaffair.

She repeated that word over and over in her mind, hoping that at some point it would actually stick.

Tony reached for her T-shirt on the floor, drawing it back over her head. Then the two of them pulled their lounge pants back on. She picked up her bra, and Tony his shirt, but that was as much as they bothered to dress.

Jess turned toward Rhys, who sat on the edge of the bed, and kissed him one last time. “Good night,” she whispered.

“Good night, love.”

Another term of endearment. That was all it was. She wasn’t his love. Regardless, Jess’s heart skipped a beat and she smiled.

Tony placed his hand on the small of her back, the two of them leaving Rhys’s room together.

“I’ll see you get home safely,” he joked.

A breathy laugh escaped as, five seconds later, they stood before the closed guest room door.

“Well,” she whispered, adding to his joke. “This is me.”

Tony kissed her, this one more like Rhys’s. A kiss of affection rather than passion.

“Tonight was…” she started, failing to find a word powerful enough to explain just what it had meant to her.

“Yeah,” he said. “It was.”

He kissed her again, then opened her door. She stepped inside, giving him a little wave as she closed it behind her.

Jess leaned against the closed door, her eyes closed, her body and mind and heart all in perfect agreement for the first time in her life.

Tonight was perfect.
