I pulled into my parents’ driveway and climbed out of the car with my bag clutched to my chest. State trusted me with his phone, and I wasn’t about to lose it on him. Especially when I needed it to contact Country. I hoped I wasn’t too rude to him before, insisting I would take care of it. They may even have a lawyer on hand, but would they be as good as Dad’s contacts? I didn’t want to risk it, and also, taking charge would help me stay settled until I saw State again with my own eyes.

Without knocking, I went through the front door and called, “Dad? Mom?”

“Kitchen,” Mom yelled back.

I found them sitting at the dining room table. Dad had his phone in front of him. Taking a seat, I asked, “Anything?”

“Lewis has asked me to call him back when I have a bit more information.”

Frustration formed in my chest. “What?”

“Where does State work? What kind of connection does this cop have with the girl?”

I nodded. “Okay. State’s co-owner of Polished Pah, Pussies.” My face warmed, but I pushed down the embarrassment over saying “pussies” to my father. “Um, to get a clearer picture, maybe I should have Country on speaker. He knows everything.”

“Who’s Country?” Mom asked.

“He’s the president of the Diamond MC where State is the vice president.”

“Ooh, he sounds important,” Mom cooed.

“Beth, not relevant right now.”

“Yes, of course. Courtney, call the president.” She smiled and doubled down on her eyebrow bouncing. “I didn’t realize how much I wanted to say those words until I said them.” She waved me on.

I grabbed State’s phone out, unlocked it, and hit Country’s name.

“Court?”

“Hi, Country. I’m sitting here with my parents, and Dad’s asked me a couple of things to tell the lawyer, but I wanted you to hear everything because you know more than I do.”

“Got it.”

“Country, this is Patty. My daughter has informed me that State is co-owner of Polished. And she also mentioned there was a girl involved from work?”

“Yeah, Patty. Her name’s Lisa, and Ray Bond, the cop, is her client. He’s become obsessed with her. Wants her to leave her job and marry him. She doesn’t want anythin’ to do with him, which is why she lied about datin’ State. In the last couple of weeks, Ray has started showin’ up outside the compound and a couple of times outside State’s own home. He just sits and watches, but as we can all tell now, it wasn’t just for kicks to try and intimidate State into leavin’ Lisa. He wants to get State out of the picture, and I guess sendin’ him to jail for some fucked up… shit, sorry.”

Dad laughed. “It’s fine, Country. Look, I’ll give this information to Lewis Devlin, my lawyer friend, and see what he says. He’s already found out they have a witness that places State in the area and an item they think is State’s.”

“This is fuckin’ bullshit. Who are they sayin’ he murdered? Who’s tellin’ the cops it was him, and what was the evidence?”

“I don’t have the answers to the last two, sorry. But the victim’s name is James Sullen.”

We heard muttering in the background.

Country cursed. “Find out,” he ordered. “Patty, you gotta know State wouldn’t have murdered this guy. I swear on the club your girl is safe with my brother.”

“You don’t have to swear on anything, Country. My daughter is smart. She knows who to trust, and already she’s put that trust in State.”

“Good to hear.”

“We do have a slight problem, though.”

“What’s that?”

“Lewis is out of town until early tomorrow. He won’t be able to get to State until then to get him out, which I’m sure he’ll be able to do.”

“Shit. The lawyer the club has won’t be back until next week.”
