Asshole!

She exhaled and tried to catch her breath, forcing herself to calm. Because Jameson was next, and she was truly looking forward to this experience.

They’d previously discussed how they would act, considering he’d been the one to officially invite her but they also wanted to keep the change in their relationship secret.

“Your Royal Highness,” she said, finally offering him that perfect curtsy.

“Duchess,” he said.

She’d gotten so used to him calling her Dani, that hearing his delicious voice using her stage name sent tendrils of heat through her.

He held out his hand. “You look lovely this evening. Thank you for being here.”

“It was my pleasure,” she said, squeezing slightly and stroking her finger along his palm.

His eyes darkened, his nostrils flared, and she knew that look. Knew that he was remembering the pleasure he’d previously given her.

There he was. There was her Jay.

She released his hand and he held on for a fraction of a second before letting go.

Thank God for the padding in her dress. Her nipples were so hard, she was pretty sure they’d be visible through the metallic fabric.

Which was not the impression she wanted to give the queen.

“Your Majesty.”

The queen scanned her from head to toe, her blue eyes sharp. “I must admit, you’re not what I was expecting.”

What the hell did that mean?

She hadn’t expected Dani to be the artist Jameson chose to perform?

She hadn’t expected someone who looked like her to be called Duchess?

But any answer to these questions, even if forthcoming, would have to wait, as another white-gloved hand motioned for her to move into the dining room, so as not to back up the line.

Again.

She was directed to a seat at the long table, only two spots from the head. If the queen sat there and Jameson near her, that would put Dani close to him for the evening. She wondered if he’d had a hand in the seating arrangement.

“Intense, right?” Liam said a few moments later, sitting next to her. “I thought meeting the president was intimidating.”

“Not all of us have had that pleasure,” she said.

“Trust me, after this, that will be a walk in the park. Princess Bettina gushed all over me. And what was up with the young one, Prince Jameson? I half expected him to summon the guards and throw me in the dungeon! He looked as if he wanted to murder me.”

Dani’s heart stuttered in her chest. “He did?”

“Yeah. Maybe his teenage girlfriend had a crush on me or something.”

The music started, and around them everyone stood, so Dani followed suit. The royal family walked in and took their seats at the main table. When she saw the final seating, Dani understood the folly of her earlier thinking.

The queen was placed at the center of the table, with Jameson on her right, Prince Julian on her left. From her vantage point, Dani could see Jameson, but they weren’t seated close enough to talk, nor could she hear what he was saying. He was seated next to a beautiful woman in a pink gown, her blond hair in a chic bun, who seemed very familiar with him. Actually, the woman seemed familiar to Dani, too. She said something to make him laugh, leaning so close their shoulders touched.

“Maybe second time’s the charm,” Kay, seated on her other side, said.

“Excuse me?”
