“Damn. You’re no fun.” She let her feet fall with a thud and straightened. “Look, I didn’t mean to bother you. I just needed to get out and be around people.”

“Weren’t you looking for privacy and time to unwind?”

“I was. I am. I mean, it all sounds good in theory, but...” She heaved a sigh and stood, smoothing a hand down the scrap of patterned fabric masquerading as a sundress. “I’ll go.”

“Duchess?”

She turned. Was she aware of the heart-stoppingly stunning figure she made, framed in his doorway, centered in the sun’s spotlight?

Of course she was.

“The Botanical Gardens are on the other side of campus. Many find them charming, with footpaths, bridges, and tunnels that visitors enjoy exploring. If you’re looking for tranquility, it’s the perfect spot.”

“That sounds lovely. I’ll check it out.”

He cleared his throat. “Yes, well...”

Their gazes met and held for one, two, three heated moments before she glanced away.

“Have fun tonight.” She hefted her bag on her shoulder. “I’ll see you when you get home.”

Unexpected warmth suffused him at her use of the word “home.”

He extinguished the warmth before it gained any traction.
