More than I can say. He looked down at the ground where he scuffed his boot against the side of the stall, trying to figure out the best way to say what he wanted her to hear. It had been so long since he’d talked like this with a woman. Since he’d wanted to talk like this.

He let out a sigh as his gaze return to hers. “Yeah, I did.”

Wow.Way to go, Montgomery. That was articulate.

She scrunched up her nose in that cute way she did when she was thinking. “Why?”

He rolled his shoulders to keep from shrugging them. He wasn’t good at this mushy feelings stuff. “Because I like you, and it’s been a long time since I’velikedanyone.”

“Ilikeyou too.”

He thought she’d put the same emphasis on ‘like’ that he had, and his heart gave a little jolt of excitement. But he still wasn’t sure he was saying enough.

“I mean Ireallylike you. So much that I can’t stop thinking about you. And I think we just might have something here.”

“I think so too.”

“You do?” His heart was doing all sorts of jolting now. And his palms were starting to sweat.

“Well, yeah. I mean, if the somethingyou’retalking about is the same somethingI’mtalking about.”

He groaned. Yep. Clear as mud.

This was it. Time to fish or cut bait. He took her hands in his. “Kaylee, I know we haven’t known each other long, and this seems really fast. But I swear I felt something for you the very first day I met you.” He rubbed his thumbs over her knuckles. “And I keep feeling more every day I spend with you. I don’t quite understand it myself, but maybe I don’t need to. All I do know is that I’m falling for you. And the idea of you driving away tomorrow and me never seeing you again scares me to death.”

Her voice was soft as she whispered in return. “Me too.”

He wished she would say something more than just agree with him. Like that she was falling for him too. But at least she wasn’t disagreeing with him. And maybe that’s what herme toomeant.

He took a deep breath then plunged further in. “So, what I’m saying is that I’d like you to stay. At least for a little while, just to see if this reallyisthe something we think it is.” He shook his head. “Dang, I feel like my mouth isn’t saying the stuff right that my heart is telling it to. You’re the writer, you’re better at words than I am.”

“I can hear what your heart is saying just fine.” She smiled up at him—a smile full of promise and possibility. “You’re making perfect sense to me. I’ve got a crazy week ahead of me, but I’ll figure it out, because I’d like to stay too.”

“Good.” He leaned in, this time intent onreallykissing her.
