Max had taken off down the mountain, crashing down the path almost as loudly as the fallen tree had. But Cooper came over and laid down next to Luke, pressing his body close to offer comfort.

“It looks like we’re on our own here, boy,” Luke told the dog, ruffing the fur around his neck.

He let out an infuriated growl. Now instead of racing down to stop the woman he loved from leaving, he was trapped on the side of the mountain with no phone and no way to get help.

At least the bear had run away.
