As she felt that barest caress, Kaylee knew she didn’t need Sassy anymore. She was strong enough on her own. And with that, she didn’t wait for Luke to finally kiss her—she leaned in and kissed him.

The kiss wasn’t like in her books—it wasn’t fictional. It was real. And it was amazing. In all its toe-curling swoony glory. She melted into him, and everything else fell away.

Until Cooper jumped up on them, trying to get in on the affection.

They laughed as they both reached to rub the dog’s head at the same time. Luke took her hand in his. “You ready to go home?”

She nodded.Home. It was only one word, but it meant so much.

“I know you’re the writer,” Luke said, putting his arm around her shoulder and drawing her to him. “But I say we curl up on the couch with Cooper and Gladys and some of that chocolate cake and make our own story-book ending.”

She grinned. “You, our dogsandcake? That sounds like a happily ever after to me.”
