“You would?” He looked surprised.

“Absolutely. Having somebody with you will take the pressure off.”

“You think?”

“Oh, sure. I mean, it's a potentially awkward situation. That would be the case even for people who are prepared.” He nodded. “And I'm pregnant, so I’m a great distraction.” Chase threw his head back with a laugh. “Do you think it's safe for me to fly?” I belatedly asked.

“I don’t know.”

“I’ll text my doctor right now.” I slipped out my phone, tapping out a quick text. “It's to her assistant. She'll read it and let me know.” Only moments later, her assistant replied. You're safe to fly. She said it's better to do it before the last two months of your pregnancy, but it’d be okay then too.

“How far along are you? Remind me,” Chase teased.

I smiled over at him. “You know exactly how far along I am. Five and a half months.”

“So we should go soon.”

“Just tell me when.”

He took a deep breath, his shoulders falling as he let it out. He glanced over just as the exit sign for Willow Brook came into view. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For offering to go with me. For understanding why it might be good for me to have somebody with me.”

He reached across the console, curling his hand over mine where it rested on my thigh and squeezed it. I laced my fingers in his and squeezed back.

This felt good. I was glad he told me what was going on.

We drove in comfortable silence until he turned onto Main Street into Willow Brook and glanced over. “How are you feeling?”

“About what?”

“Us,” he said simply.

That single word,us, set my heart to pounding in a reckless gallop. My breath was shallow, and butterflies spun in my belly. “Good. I think. What about you?”

He held my gaze for a beat before looking forward at the road. “Good. Really good.”

Sometimes with Chase, I felt as if I had jumped off a cliff that I'd been running toward and hadn’t known was there. Now, we were falling together. I just hoped our landing would be solid.
