“Yeah, but for how long? Anyway, Ray broke the pledge already. You are off the hook.”

“I was doing it for me. To get my head on straight and concentrate on my career. You know how guys and relationships can really knock you off track.”

“Don’t I know it. There is a cute guy I keep seeing around the hotel. I swear I’ve started looking forward to going to work every day. Just to see him. What the hell is wrong with me?”

“Ha. I knew you had a glow. So, a work crush? Those are so fun and so dangerous. The danger makes them all the more fun.”

She gave me an eye-roll. “I know that. All the above and more. But I’m not sure if he works at the hotel or not. He seems like someone important, but no one knows if he’s an executive from headquarters or an important client.”

“Tell me about him. Where’s he from?”

“I don’t know. I’ve only overheard him speak to someone else. He has a slight accent I can’t place. But he’s a bit secretive. He seems to hold back in the shadows. I heard he’s European, but never which country. Honestly, I was beginning to wonder if he was a spy. Or mafia.” She let out a belly laugh. “Which is ridiculous. But he is definitely hiding something.”

“Maybe a wife and baby back across the pond,” I said.

I didn’t miss the sad glint in her eyes as she shrugged. “Maybe. But I don’t think that is it. I’ve heard he’s a real deal gentleman. It’s strange.”

“Ah, well, maybe he’s gay. I adore my gay friends. They have the best manners too. Though that would be a disappointment if you really like him.”

“Yeah, it would be. But something tells me, that’s not it. Anyway, most people are out these days. I’m not sure if he is in management or a guest. Either way, he is off limits.”

“Yeah, half the guys are taboo these days. But that makes it all the more alluring, doesn’t it?”

She let out a long, hollow sigh. “Yeah. But they really frown on that sort of thing at work. No fraternizing with the guests. And everyone knows it’s a huge mistake to date your boss.”

And here I was considering working with the only man I knew who could heat me up in a snow storm. “Seems like you've got your own dilemma going on. Why do men and dating have to be so damn complicated?”

“Beats me,” Lexy said.

I checked my phone for the time. “I’ve got to go. Liam is picking me up at seven.” I stood up and gathered my purse and brief case. Lexy got up and hugged me. “We’ll continue this conversation next time. Let’s get together again soon.”

“Definitely. And let me know how things go with your frenemy,” she said.

I chuckled. “Will do.”

As I rode the taxi to the garage where my car was parked, I felt a panic attack coming on. It was a good thing there wasn’t much time for me to overthink the night, or I may have ended up canceling. Just the thought of Liam caused so many different emotions in me. If I hadn’t needed the job so bad, I would have backed out now for sure.

Once I was alone in my car, I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself. I mentally put on my armor. I was going to war. With Liam or myself?

Probably both.
