“That must have been tough to deal with. Not only their passing, but with your career,” she says gently.

She shows great depth of emotion and empathy, I would say “for her age,” being early to mid-twenties, but there’s more to her compassion than paying lip service. I’ve said more words to her in the past hour than I have to anyone in years.

“I gave up my career after the accident to care for Chase. I could have hired a nanny and taken him on the road with me, but he needs stability. We were both grieving, so we relocated to the Sunshine Coast and moved in with Annie. We haven’t spent much time apart in six years and I dropped him off today. That’s why I was in such a foul temper.”

She sniffs back tears and smiles. “Well then, we better cheer you up.”

“Well, that was fucking depressing, wasn’t it?” I laugh and she joins me, the sweet sound of her laughter thawing the cold layers of my heart. If she had any reservations about having dinner with me, I just guilted her into accepting my proposal.

She removes the hair tie from her wrist and pops it between her teeth, pulling her long blonde hair back off her face and tying it into a neat ponytail, the color of spun gold.

“Which way did you say the trail was?” She bends over to tie her shoelaces, causing a lump to form in my throat. I swallow thickly before answering.

“Follow the boardwalk all the way to the water, and you’ll see a sign pointing in the right direction.”

Sara waves and calls out, “See you later,” before jogging down the boardwalk. I lick my lips as I watch her perfect booty sway side-to-side, tempting me with her perfect curves.

She’s intriguing and I want to unpack all her layers, right after I peel off her clothes and lay her bare like the gift she is. Later, if things go the way I hope, there won’t be any more talking.

Unless it’s dirty talking, and then, I’m all in.
