TOPLESS WOMEN TALK ABOUT THEIR LIVES - SARA

Shameless. That’s what I am.

I could never imagine myself opening the door for a handsome man dressed in next to nothing, but that’s exactly what I just did. Without any hesitation too, which shocks and thrills me in equal measure.

Brax looks especially handsome in a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing muscular forearms. His bulky frame fills the doorframe and if he weren’t smiling at me, I’d be intimidated by his size.

How did I fail to notice how big he was? As I glance at his body, I feel as if I’m seeing him for the first time.

I smile sweetly and pull the door open, noticing the picnic hamper he’s carrying. Whatever food he brought smells delicious. I assume we aren’t going out for dinner, and I’m relieved. I had an exhausting day.

“Your room is one of the best the resort has to offer, so I thought you might enjoy staying in.”

“Sounds perfect. What’s in the basket?”

He places the basket on the table and removes each item, placing everything neatly on the table, revealing cheese, crackers, cold cuts, and pickles in little jars. It’s such a thoughtful gesture, and I appreciate all the trouble he’s gone to.

“Yum!”

Our eyes meet, and he looks genuinely pleased with himself.

“Help yourself,” he says. I can tell he’s trying really hard not to look at my cleavage.

“I’ll get changed. Back in a moment.” I grab the pile of clothes I left on the bed and zip into the bathroom. The silk bra and matching panties cling to my curves, flattering them to perfection.

Brax opens the sliding doors which lead to the deck, and I hear the unmistakable sound of a cork popping from a bottle of champagne. I slip on a pale pink cotton shift and join him on the deck as soon as I can.

He greets me with a smile and hands me a glass of chilled sparkling wine. Brax pulls out a chair, motioning for me to take a seat. We sit side-by-side, facing the view across the bay.

We clink glasses in a silent toast. When I tip the glass to my lips and take a sip, tiny bubbles tickle my nose. It’s fruity and delicious.

A sprinkle of stars dot the night sky, adding their magic to the atmosphere of what is promising to be an interesting evening.

“Did you know there’s a Jacuzzi on the deck?” Brax asks, a hint of something suggestive in his tone.

I had no idea there was a hot tub when I booked the room.

“Really?” It’s extravagant, and I wonder if we’ll end up getting in later.

“How was the run?”

“It was just what I needed,” I answer. “The scenery around here is stunning. You’re lucky to live in such a stunning, pristine environment.”

“True. It’s a great place for Chase to grow up. He loves it, and basically, it’s the only place he knows.” His tone is wistful, and I’m grateful he feels comfortable enough to want to talk about Chase with me. I’m not sure how to proceed, but I figure I’ll feel my way through and stop if I sense him clamming up.

“How old was Chase when you moved here?” I ask, thinking it’s a neutral way to ask without instantly reminding him of the four loved ones he lost.

Brax keeps his eyes on the charcuterie board and uses a fork to tease a thin slice of salami from the pile.

“He was four when his parents died. That was six years ago.” He offers the salami to me, but I decline. “Young enough to start fresh, and too young to still remember his real parents. He calls me dad, but I do everything I can to keep their memory alive for him.” Brax rolls the salami into a cylinder and pops it into his mouth.

His tone is matter-of-fact, as though he accepts the abrupt changes he had to make in his life, but it must have been a shock. I don’t know what to say and figure it’s best to wait and listen.

“I made a couple of calls to find about tours to the Emerald Mermaid and discovered something interesting.” His eyes meet mine, and his tone brightens. “There’s a Dive and Dine charity fundraiser at Saltery Bay in a couple days.”

Why is he telling me this? I take a sip of champagne to mask my confusion. “It was thoughtful of you to call and find out,” I say. “It sounds interesting and right up my alley.”
