“Something like that. If you’re working, I’ll hang out with Chase or my old teammates. If things work out with Reid, I’ll have a job too.”

He’s right. I’m beginning to understand the bigger picture, and how the pieces fit together.

“Does Chase know about me?”

“Uh-huh.” He plays with my hair, twirling the ends around the tip of his finger. “I told him you’re a mermaid and he really wants to meet you.”

The way he loves Chase makes my heart melt, but at the same time, I have mixed feelings about where I fit in. Complicated feelings.

“I don’t know the first thing about raising a child.”

“Sara, I’m not asking you to be his mom. Your focus is your career, and I want you to take all the time you need to blossom.” He brushes his thumb across my cheek, then cups my face tenderly. “I struggled when I became his dad, but I knew the kid and loved him already.”

I lean into his hand, absorbing his warmth. “All I ask, is that you get to know him. Be his friend. If you develop a deeper bond, then great, but you can’t force it.”

I swallow around the lump in my throat and shift nervously in the car seat. Its time he knows the truth about me. He needs to make an informed decision about his life.

“Brax, don’t you want your own children one day?”

He searches my face before answering. “Maybe, but it’s up to you. If you want to focus on your career, that’s fine with me, but if you want a child of your own, I’m fine with that too.”

His words of validation make me teary. I should be happy, but his answer means I need to be more direct. Even though he’s giving me a way out, it doesn’t stop the fact he needs to know everything about me. It’s not my fault, or my choice, and I refuse to beat myself up about it.

I straighten up and tuck a lock of hair behind my ear. I blow out a slow breath to ease the tightness in my chest before speaking.

“I can’t have children. The accident messed me up inside.” I expect my voice to be reed-thin and weak, but as I say the words, my tone is clear as a bell.

His eyes search my face, and he draws me into his arms, squashing my face against his hard chest. “I’m so sorry sweetheart.” He holds me tight in his embrace and whispers softly against the crown of my head, his deep melodic voice washing over me. “You are perfect in my eyes. You’re all I need,” he says with great affection.

His eyes search my face, and the yearning I see makes me blush.

“I’ve waited for you my entire life, my little mermaid,” he says tenderly. The tone of his voice and his words crack my heart wide open. “All you need to do is be yourself, and everything will unfold exactly as it’s supposed to.”

How could I doubt we were anything less than perfect together? We are meant to be.

“You’re amazing. I’m so glad I found you.”

“Sara, I thought my life’s purpose was hockey, and then it was raising Chase. But now that I’ve met you, I know that making you happy is my purpose in life.” His tone is light and playful, and I feel as though we’ve navigated through the roughest waters and are coming out the other side.

“Oh yeah? What’s that.”

“Do you want the PG version, or the truth?” His eyes roam over my body, his gaze so intense I might combust.

“Go on. Tell me,” I tease.

“Feeling you sink down on my cock and ride me like you did the first time is my purpose.” His dirty words make me blush.

He slips his hand down my top and pinches my nipple. I squeal and try to pull away, but he grips my chin with his other hand, lifting my eyes to meet his.

“I’m going to fuck you so thoroughly you’ll be sore for days,” he growls. “Every time you move, sit, or walk anywhere, you’ll be thinking of me, wanting me to do it all over again.” The sound of his voice vibrates over my skin, lifting the hairs on the back of my neck.

He cups the back of my head, drawing me closer, then claims my lips in a sizzling kiss.
