CHAPTER6

david

Tori doesn’t say anything while I drive her home. As much as I’d like to voice my opinion about Sharon, I don’t bother fueling the fire. It’s just not worth the trouble and the last thing I want to do is upset her even more. If Tori wants to talk about it, I’m here to listen, but this Sharon woman better hope I don’t see her out in public anytime soon.

“Thank you for lunch, David,” she says without looking at me.

“Anytime, Tori. I’m always here for you.”

She uses her knuckle to swipe at a tear underneath her eye. “Yeah, well, I guess there won’t be a next time. I’m just not ready for this.”

And with that, she climbs out of my truck and hurries to the front door.

I can’t blame her for being upset but I hate she’s decided to take her frustrations out on me. At least it feels that way.

I give her time to get inside then slowly pull out of the driveway. The rain is coming down harder now and it’s probably best that I go on home.

What started out as a fun afternoon turned awful in a matter of minutes…no thanks to a vile woman.

I pull out the bottle of whiskey from the cabinet and press it firmly to my lips. The taste is far from desirable but it’s the aftereffects I’m looking for. I don’t normally drown my sorrow this way, but today is an exception.

After a few swallows, I clench my teeth together and fight the tears that threaten to spill from my eyes.Tori, this isn’t easy for me either.

Another few swallows and my stomach burns as though it’s on fire. No, it’s just not fair. Damn it, it’s just not fair.

I rear my arm back and hurl the empty bottle across the room. Glass shatters into a million pieces, but my heart is broken even more than that.
