Page 6 of Love Me Not

I shake my head at the absurdity of such a thought. The glass of wine I had before going to bed last night is affecting my head.

“Are you okay?” he asks and looks me directly in the eyes.

“Yeah, why do you ask?” I pretend like I don’t know what he’s questioning me about.

“Never mind. I thought you were shaking your head,” he says and stands up from his crouched position. “Let me grab one of those alcohol pads so I can clean it for you. Wouldn’t want it to get infected.”

“I can do that myself,” I insist and attempt to sit up straight.

“I’ve got it, Tori. Stay put.”

“Okay.”

I bring my foot up and rest my ankle against the top of my knee so I can get a better view of where the splinter was a few moments ago. Though I’m not too worried about it anymore since David managed to get all the pieces out, he’s right that I need to keep it clean. And a bandage over it wouldn’t hurt either.

“Found a Band-Aid with antibiotic cream already in the cotton part. I think this will work perfectly.” David rips open the alcohol packet then takes the spot beside me so he can finish tending to my foot.

I can feel the warmth coming from his body and I suddenly realize just how close we are sitting next to each other. It doesn’t even bother me that he’s hot from being outside earlier or that his clothes are damp with sweat. In fact, I think it’s kind of sexy.

Suddenly, a loud rumble of thunder shakes the entire house. “Oooh!” I jump and without realizing what I’m doing I place my hand on the top of his leg. “That didn’t sound good.”

“I knew rain was moving in—” David says and looks up at the ceiling. The loud patter of rain hitting the roof keeps him from finishing what he was about to say.

“What about your mower?” I ask worriedly. “It’s not good for it to get wet, is it?”

“Crap!” David exclaims and jumps up off the sofa. “I’m pretty sure I have a tarp in my truck.”

And with that, David runs out the front door.
