“We were both horny for hours afterwards,” Rory says flatly, his voice so quiet I have to strain to hear him. “And I guess one thing led to another.” He shrugs, as though that’s all there is to the story. “Trust me, it’s not the greatest romantic tale. It’s just two teenage boys wanting to come. That’s it. He’s applied meaning to a room when it meant nothing to me.” He pauses and adds, “If I’d have known the amount of drama it’d cause, when drama is absolutely thelastthing I want…”

I nod slowly. It’s a piece of the puzzle, something I’ve always wondered about Finlay as I meet his gaze when we’re both watching Rory. I can be sure of one thing, however: at some point, Finlay caught feelings. Whatever happened last summer meant more to him than the way Rory glibly describes it.

My heart suddenly aches for Finlay. He’s so full of love, showing it to everyone — including me, including even Danny — in order forsomeoneto reciprocate it, and I… I’ve let him down just as badly as Rory.

“You took advantage of him to get off,” I say, hurt on Finlay’s behalf, and Rory rolls his eyes.

“Now you sound like him.”

“So you listen to him, but you don’t believe him?”

Rory picks up his sword. “I don’t think he has a right to be mad at me, no. I gave him what he wanted when I could have told him to fuck off. I made no promises it would last.” When he sees my hurt expression, Rory softens slightly. “He’s myfriend. It was a one-time thing. It’s not my problem if he got it into his head that it meant more than it did.En garde.”
