“No. Absolutely not.Keep talking. It’s the only way to break this thing down, if they see that not everyone believes in this ridiculous coup.”

I realize after a beat that I’m staring at Jonie with wide, admiring eyes. “You’re so brave,” I tell her, a rush of words I can’t hold back any longer. I’ve never met anyone like her before and all I can think iswhat an inspiration.

Jonie shrugs modestly. “It’s not bravery, really. It’s desperation. People do desperate things when the world is falling apart. Anyway,” she adds in a bright tone. “I’ve taken upfartoo much of your time and I really should let you get on. You have the whole university to explore, and my concerns are just one small part of it.Dotry to join us for the demo, won’t you? We’ll be at the quadrangle come five. The more people there, the more we can break the illusion that we’re all united behind Benji.”

“We’ll try,” Rory answers shortly, speaking for all of us, and Jonie nods as though she expected this response.

We say our goodbyes. Rory wraps his arm around my waist and Danny strides beside me.

After a long period of thoughtful silence, Danny says, “Well, that was… enlightening.”

“That’s one word for it. If this is the outside world,” Rory murmurs, and he brings me closer to him almost subconsciously, as if to keep me safe, “then things are a hell of a lot worse than I ever realized.”
