“I kissed someone the other day. Don’t even know why I did it. There was this party. I was drinking, and I wanted to feel something other than empty and sad. So, I kissed him, and I can’t take it back. I can’t take back anything I’ve felt or thought.”

She got up, rushing out of the room. Fuck. That was not what I expected her to say. Getting up quickly, I could hear her footsteps climbing the stairs two at a time.

Joining the family in the kitchen, everyone immediately turned to me when I entered the room. There was a slim chance they hadn’t heard Katie running up the stairs. Evie paused before letting out a sigh.

“Nate, go up and talk to her.”

I must have looked confused because Mr. Hanover nodded in agreement with his wife’s words.

“You’re the only one who will get through to her. We’ve been trying for months. She’s blocked us all out.”

Taking each step slowly, I wasn’t sure what I could even say. I thought when she had stopped me and kissed me, that meant it was all going to be okay, but I underestimated the situation. Knocking gently on the door before opening it, I cautiously walked into her room. Sitting down on her bed, I didn’t dare touch her.

“Katie, I don’t care what happened when I was gone. I know it couldn’t have been easy on you. You can tell me anything. I don’t want to have secrets.”

Her eyes were red and filled with tears.

“I wanted to feel something. All I felt was more regret after it happened. Then you show up out of nowhere after all this time. I should have waited. I never should have kissed him.”

Without warning, she climbed onto my lap, wrapped her arms around my neck, and pulled me in close. Our lips brushed against one another as I could feel her tears stream down her face. She pressed harder onto my lips with her own. I wanted to adjust myself, being that the instant she climbed onto me I had no control over my body’s reaction to her, but I didn’t dare move her. I could tell she needed to feel in control. She spent every day with none and if that’s what she needed right now, that was exactly what I was going to give her. Her tongue slid onto mine, making my heart race. Wrapping my arms around her back, I pulled her in closer. There was a tug on my hair as she pulled herself back, looking at me.

“Why are you the only one that makes me feel anything? When I touch you, when you look at me, when you talk to me, it’s like you set off a fuse that reminds me I’m alive. I don’t want to ever lose you again, Nate. I’m so scared that you’re going to just disappear again. That this is all just a dream. I’ve had so many dreams about you showing up and I always wake up and you’re still gone.”

Grabbing her hand, I placed it on my chest, pressing it against my heart.

“You feel that? I’m here. I’m here for you and I’m not going anywhere ever again. I love you so much, Katie Hanover.”

Falling back into my chest, she hugged me tightly. Her words were soft and muffled against my neck.

“I love you too Nathan King.”
