“Public outings together, family dinners, stuff like that. You want your family to believe we’re really a couple, right?”

“Yes,” she said, more than a little hesitation in her tone.

“Okay, so if there’s nothing planned at the moment, we can handle those as they come up, then.”

“What about your dad?”

I stilled. “What about him?”

“Well, how are we supposed to convince him we’re in a real relationship if we’re not in the same state as him?”

“Oh. That’s already taken care of. I talked to him this morning and told him I was seeing you, and he’s happy for me. So, that box is checked.”

She narrowed her eyes at me, looking a little unsure. “You think it’s really that easy?”

“Should be. He’s not like a meddling grandmother—or florist—who will care about the details. He just wants to know I’m making an effort.”

“Which you aren’t.”

My mouth worked soundlessly; no coherent words able to find their way from my muddled brain into the open. Of course I wasn’t making an effort. What good would that do? Liking Lyndi might be as easy as drinking sweet tea on an August day, but falling in love with her only to lose her? No. I wouldn’t—couldn’t—do that.

“It’s fine. That’s none of my business,” she said, walls back up. “What’s next?”

Looking back at the editable PDF, I almost smiled, my own issues forgotten.Oh, this will be a fun one.“Why don’t you tell me about your past relationships?”
