“I can’t allow it. It wouldn’t be right. Will this cover it?” His voice was just as amazing as the rest of him, a purr that stroked over me in a way that felt intimate, invasive yet not unwanted.

I was certain I was going to start drooling at any moment.

“No, really, it’s fine. It’s only like a dollar anyway. Put your money away.” I waved at the hundred dollar bill he’d offered me with my left hand but then pulled it back when I saw my at home manicure was chipped and the red polish was more natural nail than gel polish.

“Are you sure?” That silky smooth voice asked, and I nearly climbed over the counter to fall at his feet like a supplicant, but I stopped myself.

“Mmhmm,” I replied while nodding stupidly, my lips pursed again to stop the words I really wanted to say…take me with you.

“Thanks, Lacy, that’s very kind of you. You have a good evening.” He lifted the cup with a slight salute in my direction before he turned to walk out of the place.

The bright lights in the store made it clear just how well-formed his ass was, and my hands clenched automatically. Absolutely gorgeous, front and back. Fuck me sideways.

I fell back against the wall behind the counter with a sigh as he got into the car and drove way. Like I said, I’ve seen luxury cars before, they don’t impress me. I’ve seen gorgeous men before too, TikTok is full of them and the thirst traps they post. I’d never in a million years have expected a real-life thirst trap to walk into this gas station but one had, and I don’t know if I’ll ever recover.

Luckily, my phone started to buzz and the ringtone I’d assigned to my BFF and roommate Mandy began to play. Oh yes, she needed to know about Mr. TikTok-thirst-trap-worthy right now.

“Hey girl, you’ll never guess what just happened to me,” I said instead of greeting her with a hello like normal people did. That was just how we rolled.

“I don’t know, but I do know I need your help. When do you get off tonight?” Mandy’s voice came over the line croaky and sniffly.

“What’s wrong, honey? Are you sick?” I felt concern rise, almost washing away the trance-like state the man had left me in. She’d been asleep when I left for work earlier that day, so I hadn’t seen her.

I grabbed a dollar out of my pants pocket while she coughed in my ear. I rung up the coffee I’d given to the man and put the dollar in the register because I was many things, but I was not a thief.

“Girl, I’m dying over here, and I need your help. Is there any way you can get off and come home? I really, reallyneed your help.”

“Sure, I’ll call Debby and ask her to come in. She loves getting in extra hours since she’s part time anyway. Do you need anything? Pepto? Tylenol? Nyquil?” There was an entire pharmacy of medicine in a rack to my left and I turned to look at the pills on offer once the coughing stopped on her end.

“Nyquil and a shotgun, please,” Mandy moaned, and I knew she wasn’t on the verge of death, not when she was joking like that.

“Hm, I’ll bring you Nyquil, but no shotguns, girl. I can’t live without my BFF. Stop playing.” I smiled at a customer that walked in, still focused on Mandy. “Listen, I’ve got a customer, but I’ll call Debby and get home as soon as I can. Don’t worry, your girl is here to save you.”

“Hm, you might not say that once you get home, but we’ll see. Thanks, Lacy. I’ll see you soon.” She hung up with a cough and not another word.

Now what exactly did that mean?
