I roll my eyes, grunting aloud. “Ugh, is it that obvious?”

He laughs a genuine wholehearted laugh. “Pleasant Hills doesn’t have girls like you Stella, it’s easy to figure out.”

Prophet does as he said and helps me locate Ruby and Bex who have wandered upstairs to another dance floor.

“There you are, Stella!” Bex shouts, stumbling as she runs over to hug me.

“Yeah, we thought we’d lost you there. Thought maybe you’d run off somewhere with some biker,” Ruby scoffs sarcastically as they both look behind me to find Prophet watching us with a sly smirk.

Well, it looks like that’s exactly what I did.

“Or not,” Ruby adds, but it’s the way she gazes at Prophet that leaves me wondering if maybe she’s seen him before. I’ll have to ask her about it later because if the scowl on her face is any sign, it’s not a good thing.

“We have to get out of here Ruby, it’s so late and we have a class in, like, six hours.”

“Relax babe, I’m way ahead of you. Drake’s out front. We were coming to look for you to head out.”

I’m relieved to hear Drake came for us, and we no longer have to wait around this place for a ride.

I turn to Prophet whose earlier smile is now a tentative scowl. “I found my friends and our ride is here. Thanks again for keeping me company, but we’ve gotta get back.”

“I’ll walk you ladies out.”

“No need,” I mutter, but he meets me with a deep scowl.

“I wasn’t asking. Like I said, it isn’t safe out there.”

Prophet walks us out of the club and into the dirty parking lot the same way we entered, only now it’s empty, except a group of bikers wearing the same jacket as Prophet, and three girls dressed in miniscule outfits parading drunkenly in front of them.

A car suddenly pulls up, one I don’t recognize but definitely doesn’t belong in a neighborhood like this.

“That’s our ride,” Ruby says, and I’m almost as shocked as Prophet looks beside me.

“That’s Drake?” I whisper, but nobody responds.

“My bro’s got a new ride. Come on, Silver, we gotta go.”

I turn to Prophet who, instead of looking at me, scowls at the car parked in front of us. “Thanks again for tonight. I didn’t know how much I needed to talk to a stranger about absolutely nothing in particular. You made me forget for a while who I was and that’s something I haven’t felt in a while.”

His gaze locks with mine and surprises me when he reaches out to tuck my wild hair behind my ear. “Never forget who you are Stella, because without you, the world would be one ugly as fuck shit hole.”

I lean into him, his eyes dropping to my mouth as I lick my lips, my mouth dry from all the alcohol and pills.

Suddenly, a car door slams shut and we both turn to meet an angry Kai standing right outside Drake’s car. And when I say angry, I mean a furious, red eyed, scowling Kai.

“I’d better go,” I murmur, hypnotized by the way Kai watches me. He’s angry, but more than that, he’s disappointed, looking at me like he’s embarrassed for me.

“Wouldn’t want your little boyfriend coming to kick my ass for keeping his girl company.”

“He’s not my…”

“Stella,” Kai warns, his voice so gravelly and tense I swear all the tiny hairs on my body stand in fear. Or is it something else entirely?

I shrug my shoulders and glance back at Prophet with an apologetic smile. I mean, what else can I do? “I’ll see you around, Prophet,” I call out, before taking off toward my friends.

A deep chuckle escapes him. “You can count on that,” I hear him whisper back before he disappears back inside without as much as a second glance.

Not that I was expecting one.
