“Came looking for answers, I assume have to do with The Order.”

“Who the fuck told you about The Order?” he asks angrily.

“Chill! Your boys talk, Zeke. Besides, I overheard him say something about it. His sister Jade is dating Sebastian Silver. Looks like there’s some trouble around there.”

“Yeah, I heard about Kane running into some shit with Stephan Silver. Apparently, he’s doing business with the bastard. Listen to me, boy, you need to stay out of whatever shit your friends got going on. Roman asks you anything. You tell him to go fuck himself.”

“Not a problem telling him to fuck off, old man, but when will you understand? I want you to trust me Zeke, I want to be a Cobra, to be in the know. To be a part of this family, your legacy.”

He stands up abruptly, slamming his fist on the dining room table, making my bowl splash forward. “You don’t know what you want, Malachi. You were smart to drop the name St. Germain. It brings nothing but trouble. Your old man was a piece of shit, and I had to leave you in that foster home to ensure you stay out of this life, yet here you are begging me to let you in.”

“You’re my only real family, Zeke. I deserve to be a part of this.”

“You deserve to become someone, Kai, to be something more than a lowlife gang member. You have a chance. You’re at that ritzy school, you can graduate, go to college, and get a life far away from this mess. Marry a pretty little rich girl, like the one who keeps stopping by here looking for you, and have pretty little rich babies...”

“I’m going to stop you right there, Zeke,” I say, ignoring the fact he’s seen Stella the times Ruby and she have shown up unwelcome and unannounced. “I don’t want any of that. I don’t want a family or a life outside of here. I don’t deserve that shit. Daddy made sure I remember that.”

“I don’t want to fucking hear you say that again. You deserve to be happy, son. To move on from the shit your father did. For what he almost let happen…”

I close my eyes, the memories of the last night I ever saw my father coming back to haunt me like they do every time I close my eyes. It’s a dark and haunting past I’ve suppressed to the bottom of my subconscious, yet every so often, the memories threaten to rise to the surface during the daylight.

“I want none of it, Zeke.”
