“We’re not meant to be clones of the people we surround ourselves with, Damon,” I admit, moving toward him at a snail's pace.

“Tell that to literally everyone who goes to our school,” he answers with a deep, raspy laugh,

I join him, laughing lightly and realizing how wrong my comment was. “Yeah, I guess you’re right, but I’ve never fit in with any of those people, either. Guess I’m destined to stick out everywhere I go.”

He chuckles softly, staring down at his tattooed fingers intertwined on his lap as he shakes his head, “That you are Little Silver,” he adds with no explanation.

“What are you doing here, Drake?” I ask, approaching the bed, more confused now than ever.

He pats the mattress at his side, silently asking me to sit and join him. “Last night,” he pauses, looking up at me, “I finally saw what he sees in you.”

My heart flutters fiercely in my chest, “Wh-what?” I ask, stuttering nervously, unsure of what he’s going to say next as I take a seat beside him.

He reaches out and cups my chin. “He swears there’s nothing going on between the two of you. Claims you and him will never happen, but what I saw last night, when I was holding your hand,” he moves in closer to me, “When I had you by my side proved the exact opposite.” He doesn't have to say who he’s referring to. I know exactly what he means.

“Drake, I…”

“He watched you with an emotion I’ve never seen before. I can’t make out what it is, but I know it’s the realest thing I’ve ever seen from him.” This time his eyes trail down to my lips, but he quickly shakes his head and releases me.

I swallow hard, unsure of what’s happening. “That doesn’t make any sense, Damon. He was drunk, high, not to mention in splendid company,” I sneer sarcastically, causing him to chuckle at my expense.

“Trust me, I’ve seen that way too many times, but what I’m talking about is jealousy, Silver. I’ve never seen Kai jealous of anything.”

My heart beats faster as he confesses thinking Kai was jealous of us together. “Well, I can assure you he was not jealous of me. You must be seeing things. Kai and I are just friends. He’s made that pretty clear.”

“Though that’s not what you want, is it, Stella?” He cups my chin in his palm once more, tilting my head up to meet his gaze.

“It doesn't matter what I want, it’s never going to happen. Trust me, I’ve tried way too many times. I’ve practically begged him to,” I stop, unsure why I’m admitting all of this to Drake, and reluctant to continue. I stand, but he reaches out to grab my hand.

“You don’t have to lie to me. I’m here to help you, Stella.” For the first time since the day I met Damon Drake, I see something different. I don’t see the broody bad boy who thought he was in love with Scarlett, the angry guy who had his heart broken when she ended things with him and got together with Ace. I see something I never thought I’d find in the dominant Dragon, a friend.

“Why would you help me?” I ask, unsure of what he’s even offering.

“Call it instinct. You look like you could use the help.”

“That’s not a good enough answer.”

A teasing smile breaks free from his brooding scowl, and he bites his lip as he stands to meet me. Towering over me, he runs a finger across my cheek, pushing a tendril of hair behind my ear. “Kai is my best friend. A friend I want to see happy. The things he’s gone through, all the shit we’ve encountered together, someone like you is exactly what he needs to heal him.”

“He’ll never accept that. I’ve told you I’ve tried.”

“Well, you’re going to stop. From now on, you’re going to do exactly as I say.”

I shake my head, not understanding what he’s talking about. “What do you mean?”

“We’re going to make him jealous.”

“What?” I shriek.

“You and I, we’re going to make Kai see everything he’s missing out on.” He watches me intently, trying to read what I’m thinking. My eyes go wide and I know he sees the fear and confusion in my gaze. “Don’t worry, Silver, you’re gorgeous, but sadly, you’re not my type. No offense.”

“None taken. The feeling’s mutual.” Now it’s he who looks at me quizzically, raising a brow as if to say,I don’t believe you. Cocky bastard. “Trust me Dragon, I see the appeal but it’s a little…” I pause, looking him up and down. “Much.”

He lets out a loud, wholehearted laugh. “Damn, Silver, I never knew you were so funny.”

“Let’s just say you remind me a little too much of the men already in my life.” That answer makes him frown, but he’s quick to shrug it off.

“Alright then,” he extends a hand out to me, “Do we have a deal?”

I place my right hand in his left palm. “What do you get out of this? You help me make Kai jealous, so he realizes he wants to be with me, but how does that affect you?”

“He’s my best friend, Stella. The only thing I want is to see my friend happy, and I know you will make him happy.”
