I’m taken aback by Zeke’s confession, Elijah laughing as he comes to his feet, wiping the blood dripping from his cut lip.

“What the hell are you talking about, Zeke?”

“Sit down, boy, while I get him something to clean himself up with.”

We do as he says, and after two excruciatingly long minutes of silence, accompanied by a glaring contest between Elijah and me, he finally comes back into the room holding a wet towel and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Zeke’s used to tending to bloody wounds and gashes given the shit his men get themselves into. We all are.

Elijah takes the towel and alcohol, pouring some on a corner and bringing it to his cheek. He winces but doesn’t drop his gaze from mine. Zeke sits to join us, his expression giving nothing away. I’m anxious, angry, and tired of being out of the loop. These two have something they’re not telling me, and I’m done with this agonizing silence.

But just before I’m about to speak, Zeke cuts me off. “There are some things about the club you don’t know about, son. Things that were in play long before you came in, things we need to keep secret for the wellbeing of the club and our men.”

“I thought we were supposed to be a family, Zeke, a real one that doesn’t keep secrets from each other. We’re supposed to make decisions as a whole, especially those that are going to affect us all.”

“This life we live isn’t a game. It’s never so black and white Kai. Some decisions need to be made because others won’t understand the logistics of it. To be a successful club president, I need to be the one to make these decisions without influence.”

“So, you’re saying you don’t trust me, but you trust him?” Elijah scoffs, finding my comment amusing, but he doesn’t deny it.

“This goes beyond that, Kai. In a world like ours, the fewer people know the better. The more people know, the easier it is for misinformation to spread, and when that happens, people die.”

“We don’t have time to give him the runaround, Zeke,” Elijah cuts it. “If you’re going to tell him, then do it. The guys are going to be here any minute.”

“I can’t explain everything to you now, Kai, not yet. There are many things still in play that I don’t want to risk falling through because I spoke too soon. All you need to know is that not everything is always how it seems.”

“Quit it with the roundabout Zeke, either say it or don’t. You say this isn’t a game, but you’re sure as hell playing one.”

“Sebastian Silver and Wallace Servite are on their way here to make a deal with us on behalf of Stephan. He wants us to move more of his Tran-Q and, given the way things are going, he now thinks we’re interested in working for him.”
