Page 80 of Make Me Yours

According to Kane, my uncle’s experiment was solely based on showing the long-term effects of the drug and its addictive properties. It started small, quarter doses, then doubling, until finally reaching the limit. Tran-Q is like a gift that just keeps giving. Subtle enough, it won’t kill you right away, but in the long run you become so addicted to it, so dependent on it, it becomes an addiction you could never rid yourself of.

Well, it looks like Stephan won't be able to parade me around to the highest bidder after all. They won’t get to see the long-term effects of Tran-Q because his main test subject is MIA.

After the whole debacle with Jade and the twins, who were thankfully saved by Kane Dalton growing a bit of a conscience, Elijah and I ran. Kane told us my uncle was planning to come after me next, figuring out Elijah had double crossed him.

Things changed the moment Elijah and I ran. Now he is no longer looking for me to kidnap me and take me away from this town. Now he’s put a hit out on me. Dead or alive, the bottom line is he wants me gone.

The quiet is not my friend. I have been alone for too long to enjoy the quiet. There is no peace in this room. Not when I keep glancing towards my purse holding that full bottle of pills. Pills I don’t need and won’t take. Pills which make me feel good and make me forget.

I can’t stop thinking about those things long enough to remember my name.

I need to get out of this room. Yeah, that's what I'll do. I'll leave this room and go for a walk to clear my head. No one knows I’m here except Elijah. I am safe, right?

I repeatedly chant this like a mantra in my head as I explore the terrain farthest from the cabin. Immediately, I relax a little more now that I have some fresh air in my lungs.

I tip my head up towards the sky, stupidly letting my guard down for just a minute. That’s when I hear it. The branch behind me snaps and another footstep crunches, the fallen autumn leaves lying in the dirt beneath my feet. I quickly spin around and come face to face with the last person I ever wanted to see again.

Fortunately, it doesn’t last long. As soon as I make out the sharp edges of my uncle's face, my vision turns black.

Damn, I wish I had that luxury when he would beat me as a child.
