Chapter 39

ROMAN

When Bass called me asking me to stop by and keep an eye on the girls while he and Ace were out, I immediately left the club. Drake understood, even though it was one of our busiest nights, since it was Halloween and we had a full house, but he knew I wouldn’t be any help if my mind was elsewhere. Besides, when it comes to Jade and Scarlett, everyone knows they come first. It took me too long to realize it, but now that I have, there is no stopping me from protecting my sisters. Something I should have done since day one, saving them from the horrible monsters we lived with. Though instead I chose to save myself, thinking if I were gone, they would be better off. Well look how fucking wrong I was.

My little girls were dragged through hell but being the strong, fierce, and independent women they are, they came back kicking and screaming, fighting with everything they had. I underestimated them and I will always regret the lost time, the years I lived without them.

However, all of that is in the past, and we swore to each other we’d let bygones be bygones, especially since we’re all we have now. More like they are all I have, because my sisters now have their own families, their own little wolf packs.

It’s fucking dark out, even though it’s only a quarter past ten, but out here along the private beach leading to Bass and Jade’s beach house, there are no street lamps to illuminate the cobblestone path I’m walking on. It took me longer than I had hoped, the streets full of trick’ or’ treaters walking back and forth causing a shit load of traffic. However, I’m here now, though it’s with a skittish feeling in my gut as I approach the house.

I hear a sudden rustling in the bushes to my left making me halt in my tracks and sneakily crouch down, moving around the back of the house. The lights are on in the downstairs living room, but from my place crouched down behind the wrap-around fence, I can’t see any movement inside. I creep around the side of the house, toward the back window of the living room, when suddenly I hear a loud cry coming from inside. One of the babies cries, and cries, for minutes without anyone moving to pick them up.

This isn’t right.

I quickly rush over to the front of the house noticing the front door is swung open. “Fuck,” I curse to myself just as I run up the steps and look inside finding Scar laid out on the floor unconscious.

Shit. I am just about to step inside when a loud rumbling has me turning behind me finding a man wearing a ski mask holding a gun in his hand. Before I can react, the barrel of his gun slams into the side of my head knocking me to the floor. The ache in my temple is blinding, a loud ringing in my ear immobilizing and me stopping me from fighting back.

I hear him speak, his voice muffled by the ringing, but his words are clear as day, “You should have stayed home Wolfe.”

The bottom of his red bottom boot is the last thing I see.

???

“Roman wake up, oh god Roman please wake up.” I hear Scarlett before I see her, my vision still fading to black as I open my eyes, though she sounds like she is far off in the distance instead of kneeling above me.

“Fuck,” I groan, grabbing my head as the throbbing in my temples nearly makes my head explode. “Scar, what the hell happened.”

“Oh Roman, they took them.” I quickly sit up and notice she’s carrying my niece Caeli in her arms.

“What are you talking about Scar?” I ask, trying to get on my feet but losing my balance.

A look of sheer terror is etched onto her beautiful face, while her eyes are clear blue and bloodshot. “Jade and the babies Roman, they’re gone, those assholes took her.”

It all comes back to me, the cracked window, the open door, Scar lying on the floor, and the asshole who beat me unconscious. Fear courses through me rendering me speechless. “Who Scarlett, who took them?!” I shout at her, my head pounding and blood boiling as I jump to my feet.

“Um, Scooter, no…”

“Skeet,” I snap, correcting her, my rage making me see fucking red.

“Yes, one of the men, he said the other’s name, he said Skeet.”

“Son of a fucking bitch, I’m going to kill the asshole when I get my hands on him.” I kick the fence of the wrap around porch, splintering the wood in half.

“Roman, it’s been over an hour. I was knocked out. I didn't,” she cries, her voice cracking, “Caeli's been crying for over an hour all alone.” She proceeds to sob hysterically and I can’t stand to see her this way, the strong, no fucks given chick now a mess because her sister and children were taken. I ache for her, feel the pain just as deeply, but I also need her to focus and tell me everything that happened.

“Where are Bass and Ace?” I ask, momentarily furious that the guys left them alone. They swore to always protect them and look at what happened because they failed.

Scar shakes her head, “They’re not answering, I tried calling countless times. They left like four hours ago, wouldn’t say where they were going, but I’m freaking out. Why aren’t they answering? Oh my God, what if something happened to them too?”

“Scar, come on sweetie I need you to calm down okay. I can’t deal with you passing out again when I need to find my sister and my niece and nephew.”

“I just, she was so scared Roman, she was so afraid for the babies.” I wrap my arms around her and Caeli, kissing her on the top of her head.

“It’s going to be okay. Bass and Ace are with Stephan. They called me when they were on their way to see him and asked me to come by.”

Scar pushes me back, her eyes suddenly going wide in surprise. “Stephan, it was him Roman, I know it was. Jade told me today that Stephan ambushed her the day the twins and Caeli were born. He offered her half a million dollars to leave. She didn’t take it, didn’t heed his warning, and now she’s gone. You know I’ve never believed in coincidences.”

I nod in agreement. We both know that nothing happens by chance, everything, and everyone we know has always been manipulated. “Stephan must have purposefully called the guys away so the two of you would be alone. He probably had them staking out the house, watching you. Skeet works for Kane Dalton, The Order must also be behind this, following orders from Stephan.”

“Roman we need to get a hold of them, I don’t even want to think about what they could be going through.”

I wrap my arms around her once again, trying to calm her down. Caeli is now fast asleep in her arms, looking like the little angel she is. “We will Scar, I promise. I know where The Order’s clubhouse is, I know where they took her.”
