My heart sprinted, nearly jumping out of my chest with nerves as my clit went va-va-voom. Was he here by coincidence? Or was he waiting for me?

Taking a second to get my body under control, I straightened up and casually walked toward Hawk—I meant, my office.

What did people normally say when someone was waiting for them at their door? Come in for a chat? Should I invite him in instead of having our usual two-minute quickie conversations in the hall?

He dragged his eyes upward as if he was scanning every inch of my body…or more like, devouring.

“Good afternoon, Dr. Wilders.” His deep, raspy voice sent delicious shivers up my spine.

I didn’t say anything because I knew my voice would betray me. Whatever I said would probably come out breathy or crack on a note.

I nodded instead. Professionally. How does one nod professionally? Was it a regular nod, or should I make it a curt one?

Oh no, I was grinning. And why was I thrusting my chest out? This wasn’t professional at all.

I turned around before I could embarrass myself further, only to see Dr. Creep heading toward us.

Fuck. This was bad. Rothwell hadn’t spotted us yet.

I whirled around and sprinted forward. I knocked straight into Hawk’s hard chest. I did my best to ignore his arms—one was snaking around my waist while the other held onto my arm to steady me—okay, my attempt to ignore them failed.

I punched my code on the keypad and turned the knob. The door swung open. Hawk and I stumbled into my office. I would have fallen, but Hawk’s arms were strong, and they felt so good.

I could feel the muscles of his arm working around my waist as they steadied me.

“Dr. Rothwell,” a voice from the hall called out.

Oh shit. I forgot why I had done this in the first place.

I twisted out of Hawk’s hug—I meant, embrace—I meant… Oh fuck, you know what I meant. I reached for the door and slammed it shut before Dr. Creep could see us, keeping Hawk and him apart.

Locking Hawk in my office with me.

Only me and him.

Alone.

All the calming effect of my office’s color scheme did squat to keep my heart rate from racing. I shuffled past the area rug to put some distance between us, sliding across the linoleum flooring around my desk, nearly losing my balance.

Hawk arched an eyebrow. “Are you that excited to see me?”

“No!” I squeaked. “I don’t want a repeat of last time.”

His hands balled into fists. “So, it’s about him? That prick deserves more pain than what I gave him. Why are you protecting him?”

“It’s not him I’m protecting.”

“Who?” Hawk looked around my office as if there might be someone else I was talking about. “Me?” He pointed to himself.

I nodded.

“You think I need protecting? I’ve never heard of anything more absurd in my life. He can’t hurt me, Kitten. That guy is a fucking weakling. Breaking his arm would be as easy as snapping a twig.”

“That’s exactly what I’m trying to avoid.”

With a disgusted expression, he asked, “So you do have a thing for that prick?”

“Eww. No.”
