Hawk

Intheclinicparkinglot, I gripped the leather steering wheel of my Aston Martin DBS.

Get it together, Hawk!

I should drive away. Go to my office. Go anywhere. Away from Lila. I’d indulged too much in these brief encounters with her that I’d deluded myself into thinking I could keep resisting her.

But today…

In that shirt that finally showed her cleavage…

Fuck, I nearly took her on the desk.

She was like a drug. The satisfaction I felt when her breath hitched in my presence made my dick twitch. I was addicted to the thrill I got when her pulse quickened each time I narrowed the distance between us. And I couldn’t get enough of those big round eyes. Full of desire, completely devoid of the usual fear or disgust I was accustomed to.

Was I so desperate for someone to see me as anything but a monster that I kept running back here for those damn humiliating sex therapy sessions?

Lila had upped the game this time. She had never flirted with me before. She’d always held back. What was different about today?

That fucking date she was going on...that’s what was different. Who was this guy? Someone she knew? A stranger?

My phone dinged, distracting me from my incessant thoughts about a woman I should be forgetting about.

Robert: Methanex is down for the third day in a row. Analysts are working on projection reports for you.

Of course, I knew they were down. I watched all our stocks every day.

Me: No need. They will recover.

Robert texted a thumbs-up, but I knew he wouldn’t stop the analysts from doing the report. It was a good exercise to see how accurate they were with prediction models.

Lila walked out of the clinic and skipped toward her car, happier than I’d ever seen her. Raging jealousy ripped through me. What the fuck was so special about this date to make her so goddamn happy?

I started my car and revved the engine, the sound helping me clear my head. My phone rang, the screen showing Leo as the caller. Another needed distraction. “Yes?”

“We have a problem.”

“Explain.”

“One of our delivery guys got delayed today…”

Delivery guy was code for a cash runner in my money-laundering business. And delayed meant one of two things. He either got jumped by someone trying to steal the cash or the cops had detained him.

“…but don’t worry, the customer received their shipment on time.”

So, not the cops. Someone tried to steal from me. And failed.

Lila got into her car and seemed to be checking her makeup in the mirror.

“Boss, you there?”

I forced my attention back to Leo. “Any damage to the package?”

“No. Delivery was in perfect condition and only a few minutes late.”

Who would dare to betray this time? Would they try again? “What about the other deliveries?”

“All routes have been given extra manpower to make sure no more delays happen until we can…find the cause.”

That meant he didn’t know who the thief was yet. At least he’d added extra security to the routes. It was too risky to say more over the phone. “Keep me posted.”

“What’s your ETA? I’ll order us takeout for supper. It’s going to be a long night.”

“Not sure. I’ve something to do first. Call me as soon as you know more.”

Before I could talk myself out of it, I tailed Lila’s car as she drove away.
