Hawk

Lilastraightenedupcautiouslyand unwrapped her arms from my body. “Thanks for catching—” She stopped short as her round chocolate eyes gazed up at me with an expression I’d seen a thousand times before but always directed at someone else.

Never at me.

My heart nearly skipped a beat. My eyes were fixated on hers. I was riveted by her gaze, which almost made me forget who I was.

Women responded to me in three ways. Disgust. Fear. Or fear mingled with lust. Something about the daunting coldness permanently engraved around my eyes and the brutal scars marring my face. Or maybe it was the vibe I gave off, one that sent warning bells blaring. Making most women cower, except for a few who got off on the thrill of flirting with danger. Either way was fine by me. I preferred it when people left me alone.

Lila’s big, warm eyes held none of the usual reactions. Her gaze only reflected curiosity. And desire, as if admiring a regular guy she found good-looking.

This was the look women gave my buddy, John. They fell easily into his charm. He was charismatic and friendly. But not me. I never got the girl-crushing-on-a-guy expression. That only happened to normal people.

Normal never fit into my life.

Lila snapped her mouth shut and cleared her throat. She had a round face and thin lips that curved slightly into a sweet smile. I bet that smile turned wicked when she was getting railed. And I wondered how plump her lips would get if they were wrapped around my cock.

Almost as if she had heard my thoughts, her cheeks turned pink over her pale sandy skin. Or maybe she had similar thoughts as mine. Suddenly, I had the urge to run my thumbs over those lips.

No.

My body rocked forward without my permission.

No.

My world overflowed with bad shit a nice volunteer girl should never be exposed to. I didn’t deserve to have someone treat me like an average guy who loved dogs and saved women from falling.

Because that was not the real me.

I quickly regained control, put my guard back up, and caged my thumbs in my fists. “What kind of volunteers do they let in here who can’t handle dogs?” I infused enough menace into my voice to make her stop ogling me.

Rambo, still leaning on my leg, whined. I gave him a quick reassuring pat on the head.

As if snapped out of a daze, Lila’s face scrunched up adorably in confusion, but that quickly shifted as indignation blazed in her eyes.

But still no fear.

What was wrong with this chick?

“Can’t handle?” Lila squeaked in disbelief. “I was handling him just fine until you showed up.”

“You can’t blame me for your lack of competence. You constantly need to be at the ready with a big dog. They could bolt at any time.”

“There wouldn’t have been anything to bolt at if you weren’t somewhere you weren’t supposed to be.” She planted a hand on her hip.

My eyes honed in on the movement. Was she trying to act tough? She was cuteness overload. And sexy as sin.

Fuck. Even in her baggy t-shirt and drool-stained sweatpants, she looked hot enough to bang. I forced my gaze away from her body. This wasn’t the kind of fun I was here for. I had to put distance between us so I could focus on the animals. “I belong here. You obviously don’t.”

“Wait a minute.” She pointed at Rambo, who was still leaning on my leg. “You knew his name. Are you a potential adopter?” Her face lit up as much as my psycho ex-girlfriend’s had the time I took her to Tiffany’s and bought her a pair of thirty-five grand diamond hoop earrings.

My eyes darted to Lila’s ears. No earrings. It didn’t even look like she had pierced lobes.

Why was I thinking about my ex, Fiona? Or jewelry? Or earlobes? Or what I could buy her to get that reaction from her again? This sleep deprivation must have been affecting me more than I thought. I needed to hurry. The sooner I started my shift, the faster I could finish and go home to catch a few hours of rest. “I’m a volunteer, so I need to—”

She shook her head, sending her ponytail flailing from side to side, making me imagine what it would be like to tug on her auburn mane as I railed her from behind.
