I ran my hands through my hair. “Oh my gawwwd. It was so damn good.”

“You did? Finally! Who?”

“Don’t be coy, Mae. You know exactly who it is.”

“Nooo! It can’t be. Don’t tell me you saw that Ricardo prick again?”

“Eww. No. Never.” I stared at her face, which was full of anticipation as if she really didn’t know who I was talking about.

I looked around the office. The door was closed, and we were alone, so it wasn’t like we couldn’t talk about how I had the hots for her client. No one could hear us, unless…

I stupidly stared at the fire detector on the ceiling as if I had X-ray vision that would allow me to determine if there was a hidden cam in there.

She glanced up. “What are you looking at?”

I leaned in close and whispered, “Do you think someone’s listening to us?”

Mae’s face went through a series of rapid changes. Her excitement was replaced by confusion for a split second, then worry until she quickly erased all emotions from her expression and settled into her professional therapist’s expression. “Lila, doyouthink someone is listening to us?”

I tsked. “I’m serious.”

She placed her hand over mine. “Lila, how long have you been having these thoughts?”

“Shut up, Mae. I’m not paranoid. You’re the one acting like you have no clue what’s actually happening. I thought you weren’t saying it in case someone was listening.”

Still in therapy mode, she said, “You know sex is a primal, basic need of every animal species, humans included. It’s right up there with food, water, and shelter. It’s normal for a person to experience certain personality changes when deprived of a basic human need.”

“Maybe my obsession with his body is only because I haven’t had sex in so long, and I’m overdue like I’m starving or something. Maybe that’s why I let Hawk—”

“Whoa, wait. Hawk?” she squeaked.

I nodded.

Her eyebrows shot up. “Since when have you been fucking my client?” She bolted out of her chair. “Holy fuckballs, what’s wrong with you, Lila? He’s a patient. My patient. Or client. Whatever. Are you trying to get yourself fired? And me?”

My mouth gaped open. “Then why did you give him my number?”

The disbelief on her face reminded me of David Rose fromSchitt’s Creek. “I would never! I may be unconventional in my methods, but I’m a professional therapist.”

My mind raced, scrambling to figure out how he got it. “Then if you didn’t give it to him…”

Mae sat down next to me. “Lila, when did he first contact you?”

“After my date with Ricardo.” I knew the exact time too, but I kept that little tidbit of info to myself. No use showing her how pathetic I was.

“And he told you that I gave him your number?”

“Yes…wait.” I took out my phone and checked out my text history. “Nooo. He didn’t. I must have assumed.”

“This is bad. Block his number. Don’t ever meet up with him again.”

“Well, I’ve never seen him outside of the clinic since our first meeting at the animal shelter.”

“Then where did you two have sex?”

“We didn’t.”

She let out a humongous sigh. “Phew.” All the tension in her body melted away.
