“Screw you, Hawk.”

The door flew open, and three Devil’s Eyes gang members charged in. They looked at the bodies on the floor and up at Fiona. One did a chin jerk as if asking her what he should do.

Fiona fucking laughed. Two of her men were dead, and her dad was out cold and bleeding out. She had a gun to her throat. And what did she do? Laughed as if she was having the time of her life.

“About time you boys showed up,” she said as if she was welcoming some friends to a party.

I dug my gun into her neck. “Shut up!”

“You know there’s no escape.” Her voice had a triumphant tone to it.

“Then we’ll leave together.” I forced her forward. “You, me, your guys. We’re all going to walk out of here very slowly.” And safely away from Lila and Nana.

“I don’t think so,” Fiona said with deadly calmness. “Boys, kill them all.”

I stopped short. Her guys raised their guns. I was faster. My arm shot out as I took aim. One down. Two down.

Fiona’s elbow slammed into my ribs, making me miss my third shot.

She ducked. Guy number three shot at me.

I threw myself into a roll. I raised my arm, aimed, and—

A sharp pain seared my right shoulder. A quick glance showed a blade sticking out of it and movement behind me as Fiona came at me with another knife.

I pulled the blade out and threw it at Fiona.

She dodged it. “Hawk’s mine,” Fiona yelled to her gang member. “You get the bitches behind the couch.”

No! Lila.

Guy number three stomped into the living room.

I grabbed my gun with my left hand and aimed at him. I shot. The bullet grazed his calf, and he stumbled slightly. I wasn’t as accurate with my non-dominant hand. Hopefully, I still had plenty of bullets left in the clips.

I pulled the trigger. Missed. I pulled again. The shot hit him in the same leg, his thigh this time, the bullet going right through. He bellowed and clutched his leg.

Bastard didn’t fall, though. He limped forward toward the couch.

Pain sliced through my back. Once. Twice. Hot liquid poured over my skin. I was bleeding.

Fucking Fiona was slashing at me with her blade, but I didn’t care. If I defended myself against Fiona, Lila would die. All I cared about was stopping the gunman from reaching Lila. I didn’t have much time left. I had to finish this.

I finally understood what Nana had meant. It wasn’t a difficult choice at all. I could not live in a world without Lila. And I’d do anything to protect her. Even let Fiona kill me.

Amidst all the pain from my wounds, my heart flooded with an overpowering warmth I’d never felt before.

Lila, I love you.

My vision blurred. My arm started to slacken.

No. Not yet.

I shot again. And again. Until I emptied my chamber and heard the thump of guy number three’s body colliding with the floor.

Fiona shrieked behind me. More stabbing pain in my back. Blackness was closing in around me.

I couldn’t die yet. I had one more enemy to kill.
