I looked up at him, at his chiseled jaw and plump lips that were perfect for kissing or whispering vulgar things in my ear. Brown eyes with just the right hint of amber, eyes that held dark promises and gave nothing away unless he wanted them to. And I saw him—reallysaw him. He was pleasure and pain. Cruelty and tenderness. Peace and chaos. Darkness and light.

He was a reflection of me.

“I know.”

“Are you afraid of me now?” There was a pain in his voice that wrapped around and pierced my heart like thorns on a vine.

“No.” The blood, the malice, the pain, none of it mattered. All I knew was wherever he was, I wanted to be there too. If he needed to be fire, I would be rain. If he needed a sword, I would be his shield. There was no force on earth stronger than what we had together. An entire ocean couldn’t even keep us apart. From the moment he’d first kissed me, my soul was home. “I’m in love with you.”

If I was honest, I’d been in love with him since I was six years old.

Exhaustion and emotions caught up with me, and I let myself melt in his arms. He pressed his lips against my forehead and whispered, “I’m in love with you too. I always have been.”

That was the last thing I remembered before waking up to him carrying me onto a private plane.
