Chapter thirty-four

It was done.

I did it.

Tiny dots of light exploded behind my eyelids as I squeezed my eyes shut and held them closed. I wasn’t ready to face the consequences of my reality yet.

In my life, there were two people I knew I could count on no matter what: Caspian Donahue and Leo fucking Costello. And I had just let one of them down.

I wished I had been the one sitting in that chair. Everything inside me crumbled, like the ice in my veins had shattered and now the broken pieces splintered off and were ripping me to shreds.

Then came the rage, shoving the pain aside and taking over. It was almost immediate, searing through me until my head pounded.

As soon as I was out of this hellhole, I was going to take everything from them.

Every-fucking-thing.

“Well done,” the deep synthetic voice rumbled next to my ear.

My eyes snapped open, hearing the amusement in his tone. The first thing that happened was the air left my lungs in a whoosh. The next thing was Leo’s laughter filling the space as a red-robed man removed his blindfold, revealing his perfectly untouched face.

There never was an acid in either can. It was all a test. A sick, twisted, fucking test. That was what these assholes were famous for—getting inside your head.

It was one big fucking mind game, and they were fighting for control.

I grabbed the man standing next to me by the front of his robe and hauled his body to mine. “I didn’t do it for you.”

“Careful what you say. You’re not done yet,” he said as another door opened, reminding me of one of those escape room games.

I dropped the man, then went straight to Leo, who was now completely unbound. “You good?” I squatted down in front of him.

He grinned. “Never better.” Holding my face in his hands, he looked me in the eye and spoke softly, “You’re in this thing now. Balls deep. Now you do whatever it takes to get out alive.” He leaned his forehead against mine, lowering his voice even more. “Whatever it takes.” We both rose to our feet, and Leo clapped a hand on my shoulder as he leaned in close to my ear. “We’ll get these motherfuckers on the other side.” And then he followed the red-robed guy out of the room.

Whatever it takes.

Something told me the test with Leo was the easiest one I would have to face, even though deep down inside I knew if I hadn’t passed, he would be dead right now. There was no way the Brotherhood would let me defy them and get away with it. They would have killed Leo for pure spite. That was why I pulled the trigger in the end. It had nothing to do with choosing to be loyal to them. It was the only way I could save his life. This was no longer about winning.

It was about survival.

Fuck.

Anniston was still in here somewhere. They had no idea who she was. Even if they did, that probably still wouldn’t save her. Her only hope was me. How fucking poetic was that?

“Are you ready for your transition?” Black Robe Guy asked, whatever the fuck that meant.

“I personally find myself flawless as is, but you’re making the calls, so…” I gestured for him to lead the way through the open door.

Surprisingly, the other two men didn’t follow, leaving me and the middle guy alone.

The next tomb-like room was the same as the last. Red-flamed torches, stone walls and concrete floors. My focus was drawn to two chains hanging from the ceiling with cuffs on the ends. I glanced at the floor. No shackles there. Interesting. I hadn’t noticed in the last room, but this one had cameras mounted in each corner.

Someone else was watching.

Sadistic fucks.

“Strip,” the man in the black robe and white mask said.

“The only way my clothes are coming off is if a leggy brunette walks through that door hungry for my dick.” I hated that my mind automatically inserted Anniston into that little fantasy.
