“We got lucky. If you had used your abilities, this would all be over,” Raven says.

I sigh and nod, holding back my anger. Raven is right. Liv survived. She handled the threat. It kills me that she had to go through that. But revealing myself would have exposed both of us and she would suffer far worse at Infinitum’s hands. I watch the recorded events unfold on the screen in front of him.

“Whoever is working for them is good. Nobody has ever lasted that long against me. They were ready for almost everything I threw at them,” he says. While I was unconscious, Raven was fighting Infinitum’s hacker. It took him half an hour to kick them out of Nova.

“Almost,” I say.

He smirks. “I might be old, but I’m still the best.”

He turns to face me. “They set Scotty and David up to take the fall for the kidnapping and murders.”

He scrolls to the video of Scotty and David in Luke and Liv’s bedroom. They already tied the others up in the living room. Scotty keeps hitting the call button on his phone and cursing when it rings out. “She’s not picking up,” he says before trying again.

I pause the video. “Any clue who she is?”

Raven sighs. “It’s got to be his contact. But he never said a name.” He plays the video again.

“Where the hell did our backup go?” David asks.

Scotty sighs and shoves his phone in his pocket. “They bounced. Fucking cowards.” He pushes his greasy hair behind his ear and lights a cigarette.

“What are we doing then?” David asks. How Scotty ended up the ringleader I’ll never know. He takes a drag and blows it out of his nostrils, then stares at the bed where Liv’s dress lays.

“I say we have a little fun. I think we’ve earned it,” he says, turning to face David.

“What do you mean?”

“What’s your stance on consent?” Scotty takes another drag.

David considers him for a moment. “It’s more of a preference for me.”

Scotty’s grin makes me want to tear his head off. “I get her first, then you can do whatever you want with her. We’ll take her and kill the rest, go get our payment and disappear to fucking Mexico or whatever.”

“Why don’t we kill the others now?” David asks.

“She’ll be more cooperative if we keep them alive. Plus, I was planning on fucking her in front of Luke, anyway. I’ll settle for doing it in front of her sidepiece.”

David chuckles and shakes his head. “Why do you hate him so much? I have no love for the entitled bastard, but what’s your beef?”

He finishes his cigarette and smashes it under his foot. “I was going to get a huge payday a few years ago for a story. His fucking dad stopped it. Cost me everything, including the money I needed for my mom’s surgery. She died a year later because I couldn’t afford it. Oh, and Luke fucked my sister.” Scotty’s fists clench at his sides.

“Fuck, man,” David says.

“Plus the fucker tried to ruin me again with a lawsuit and well, since he’s responsible for killing my mom and all, he owes me some time with his pretty girlfriend.”

David chuckles. “It’s the least he could do.”

“What’s your story?”

“I owe a lot of money to some bad people.”

“It’s too bad we had to meet like this. I bet we would have been best buds.”

“I doubt it. But hey, I’ll hold her down for you, in salute to the friendship that could have been,” David says. Scotty laughs and they move to the living room, and to their deaths. Fucking scumbags.
