“Yea, he’s alright.”

Dylan clears his throat and pretends he has something on his cheek. Garrett and I grin at each other and pull him into a group hug. He grumbles at first but relaxes and succumbs to the inevitable as he wraps his arms around us.

He smiles as he pushes away from us. “I’m tired. I’m gonna take a nap.” He turns on his heel and disappears into his room down the hall.

“We love you asshole,” Garrett calls after him. Dylan responds by raising his middle finger over his shoulder.

Garrett chuckles and turns on Captain America and we settle onto the couch. “So, are you going to tell me why you hate your mom?”

I narrow my eyes. I knew he was listening.

“She walked out on us when I was ten. She resurfaced a few months ago. I don’t trust her.”

“Understandable.”

I wait for him to say more, but he gets comfortable, pulling my feet into his lap so he has more room to sprawl out.

“That’s it?”

He shrugs. “I would trust your instincts, Liv. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.”

He turns to the TV and I settle into the cushion. My thoughts drift to Luke, and the instincts that are telling me something isn’t right with him either.

Two weeks later, I get a call from my boss. “Ok. I understand. Thank you.” I sigh as I hang up and flop onto the couch. I turn to Dylan and Garrett’s expectant gazes.

“You guys have any openings on the security team? I need a job.”

Dylan frowns. “They fired you?”

“Laid off. I wasn’t the only one.”

Garrett reaches over and squeezes my knee. “Don’t worry about it, Liv. We’ll figure something out.” A wave of gratitude washes over me.

“I want a job that doesn’t require me to wear heels.”

“I’ll cross exotic dancer off the list,” Dylan deadpans, and I smack his good arm as we both chuckle.

Luke walks in the front door a few minutes later. He leans down to kiss my temple as he loosens his tie, then tilts his head. “What’s wrong?”

“I got laid off.”

“Well don’t stress. We’ll figure it out.”

He kisses my knuckles, but doesn’t meet my eyes before heading to our room to change. I watch him leave with a frown. When he disappears, I stand and follow him. I pull the door closed behind me and he turns to face me as he unbuttons his cufflinks. I walk towards him as he starts on the buttons of his shirt.

“Hey handsome.”

He smiles, but there’s something in his eyes that’s unsettling. He drops his hands when I push them away to finish the rest of the buttons. “I missed you,” I say.

“Hi beautiful. I missed you too.”

He cups my face with one hand and gives me a long slow kiss, sending heat to my core. He hasn’t touched me since the attack and I’m desperate for him. The few times I’ve tried, he’s shut me down, claiming we don’t need to rush it. I talked about it with Susan, and she says that if I think I’m ready, then I’m ready.

And my God, am I ready. I roll my hips and rub my pelvis against his already hardened cock. I yank his shirt off his shoulders and he backs away from me and puts his hands up like he has to ward me off. It only stokes my anger.

“Liv...”

I stop his protest with a raised hand and fire in my eyes. “You need to stop treating me like a delicate flower. I’ve proven I’m anything but. I want you to touch me, Luke. The last man to touch me is someone I had to kill. It’s driving me insane. Please don’t make me beg for your affection.”
