“So who looks out for Skye?”

“Jordy has been her bodyguard for the past four years. He was in the Marines with the rest of us.”

Luke spends the next few hours telling me about his crazy life and seems more and more relaxed as time goes on, like a weight has lifted from him. Before long my eyes get heavy and I cover my mouth when a yawn escapes me.

I rest my head against the couch, facing him. I watch him as he talks and marvel at how easily he makes me forget he owns the world. The next thing I know, I’m in his arms as he carries me to the bed. I don’t want to ruin it, so I pretend to sleep and enjoy the feel of his powerful arms underneath me. My head rests on his shoulder and I can hear the steady thud, thud, thud of his heartbeat. The sound is so soothing. He lays me down and drapes a light blanket over me.

I peer up at him with a sleepy smile as he brushes the hair off my face. He leans down and kisses my forehead. The sweet gesture forms a lump in my throat and I reach out and grab his wrist before he can walk away.

“Stay.” It’s the simplest word, but my heart races as I wait for his answer.

He turns off the light after kicking off his boots and lays down next to me. I lay on my side facing him while he lies on his back. We don’t touch, but it doesn’t bother me.

After a few minutes, his hand covers mine, and he wraps his fingers around it. Nevermind, this is way better than not touching. I smile in the dark, loving the feel of his warm skin. Gripping his hand, I close my eyes. I tell that nagging, doubting voice in my head to shut the hell up. I’m still smiling as sleep takes me.
