“You better learn some manners if you’re going to get the hot neighbor to fall for you,” I say, and he shakes his head and chuckles.

He swallows a big gulp of water and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. I hope Sylvie likes uncultured gorillas.

“You hear from Luke yet?”

I nod. “We’re meeting up at the gym later. Mark is going to pick me up.”

He looks to the side as he takes another drink. “You sure you’re ok with everything?”

“I am. Will you be?”

He sighs and sets his cup down. He finishes his last bite before he answers. “I trust him to keep you safe, but things like this never go to plan. Just be careful.”

“I will. I trust him too.”

He smirks as he searches my eyes. “Are you falling in love with him?”

I hate how well he knows me. I only shrug in response, and his grin grows wider. “For what it’s worth, I think you’re making the right choice. It’s crazy, but you guys are good together.”

“It’s worth everything,” I say, tearing up. He pulls me in for a bear hug.

“I’m so proud of you for opening up again. I know it wasn’t easy."

I push away from him and wipe my face. “Maybe it’s your turn now,” I say. He narrows his gaze, knowing I’m talking about the new neighbor.

“Don’t meddle,” he says, and I laugh.
