I suck in a breath. “Holy shit.”

He leans down and kisses my neck and pulls me closer, relaxing me as I take in the information. A slow smile spreads across my face. “I’ve never been on a helicopter.”

He plants one more kiss and lifts his head to look at me. “It’s settled then.”

I heave out a sigh. I could never afford a dress for such a fancy event.

“What’s going on in there?” He taps my forehead.

“It’s nothing.” I stare at his bearded jaw as I try to figure out how to handle this.

“Whatever it is, I can fix it,” he says.

I look up into his brilliant blue eyes. “I can’t afford a dress. And you’re not buying me one.”

He looks to the side for a minute as he thinks it through.

“Is this always going to be weird? The money thing?” I ask when he stays quiet.

“This is still new, Liv. We’ll work it out. But if I buy something for you or offer to help you out, it’s not because I want to control you. I only want to make your life easier.”

“I know, but I can’t depend on you to bail me out. It won’t end well.”

“I appreciate you want to make your own way. Hell, I admire the shit out of it. But if it’s not too much trouble, can you let your rich boyfriend spoil you every so often?”

I laugh at first, but we both freeze as his words sink in. He looks to the side and rubs the back of his neck. We haven’t used the titles before.

“I uh--” he starts, but I place my finger over his lips and smile at him. We were heading towards this. A trajectory neither of us could stop at this point.

“Ok. I’ll let my ridiculouslygenerousboyfriend spoil me every once in a while.”

He grins. “Yea?”

I laugh at his boyish excitement. “Yea.”

His gorgeous smile widens. “Fuck yes. My girlfriend is so hot.”

He kisses me as I giggle and he rolls me onto my back and his hand finds its way under my shirt and over my bra. I groan into his mouth.

We both sigh in disappointment when my phone rings. I grab it and frown. “It’s my dad.” He nods and rolls off of me. Luke knows that I’ve been waiting for my dad to call me about his date with Barbara. He’s been avoiding me, and it looks like he’s ready to talk.

I adjust my clothing before answering, even though he can’t see me. “Hey Dad.”

“Hi Livvie. How are you?” His deep voice calms the unease I’ve been carrying. We’ve never gone this long without talking.

“I’m doing well.” I smile at Luke, who kisses my hand before standing. He moves to leave, but I grab his wrist and motion for him to stay. He settles onto the bed next to me.

It didn’t take long for me to get comfortable around Luke. He makes it easy for me to let my guard down and be myself. He’s also become a source of comfort for me, so I want him here for this uncomfortable conversation.

“I’m good. I’m sorry I’ve been avoiding you. Just trying to figure things out,” Dad says.

“I know. So… what did she want?”

He sighs. “She wanted to catch up. I’ve seen her a few times over the past few weeks.” I tense at his words as he continues. “She regrets leaving Livvie. She wants to come out and meet with you guys. I told her I’d come with her.”

I stare up at the ceiling as anger surges through me. Luke squeezes my hand. “No.” I’m proud of how calm I sound. I can thank Luke for keeping me from flying off the handle.

My dad sighs. “It will be good for you guys to at least talk to her. She’s your mother.”
