We approach a small table. I’m not paying too much attention, distracted by a celebrity I recognize across the room. Luke says hello to a guy who stands up from the table.

Luke steps aside and my stomach freezes as my heart beats out of control. The Brody Metzer, number one quarterback in the entire world, is standing in front of me. No, he’s looking at me. Oh shit, he’s speaking. I beg my ears to resume normal function.

“Hi Liv. It’s so nice to meet you. Luke says you’re a fan?” He extends his hand to me. The hand that has led LA to two championships in the past four years. I swallow and slide my palm against his.Holy shit.

Luke rests his hand on my lower back and I suck in a breath. I calm at his touch and smile at Brody. “Sorry. Yes. Huge fan.”

Brody grins and releases my hand. “We’ll have to take a picture later, yea?”

My eyes widen and I turn to Luke. He smiles and gives me a subtle nod. I face Brody, who grins as he looks between us.

“If you don’t mind. I would love that.”

Luke pulls my chair out for me and sits on my right. Brody takes the other seat next to me. “So, how did you guys meet?” he asks.

“He rescued me from a mugger in an alleyway.”

Brody laughs and shakes his head at Luke. “Always the fucking hero.”

Luke rolls his eyes at his friend.

“Did you swallow your tongue when he told you his net worth?”

I’m still a little star struck, and a bit taken back by his bluntness, so I struggle with a response.

“She said I was like Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent’s baby,” Luke says.

Brody looks at me for a second, then tilts his head back and roars with laughter. “You didn’t. Oh, shit, that’s good,” he says as he tries to calm down. I laugh with him, feeling more calm as we keep talking. Luke takes my hand.

“It makes sense, right?” I ask Brody, and he nods.

“It totally does.”

I grin triumphantly at Luke, and he chuckles.

“So how long have you been an LA fan?” he asks as he picks up a whiskey glass and takes a sip. Servers arrive and pour champagne for us. Luke orders us drinks.

“Since I was old enough to understand football. My brother made sure I knew everything about the greatest sport of all time.”

He chuckles. “Sounds like a good brother.”

“He’s actually your biggest fan. He’s been following you since college.”

“I’ll have to meet him some day.” He glances at Luke.

“Pretty sure I’ll be sister of the year if that happens."

“I’m sure you already are.”

I smile at him, my nerves settling. “So, tell me about Luke in high school. I know you have dirt.”

He laughs and rubs his hands together. “I thought you’d never ask.”

“Maybe this was a bad idea,” Luke says, and Brody and I laugh.

“You won’t be surprised to learn that Luke was a goody two shoes growing up, always following the rules and shit. Super annoying to a guy like me who just wanted to have fun.”

Luke rests his arm behind me on the back of my chair and I lean into him.
