Specter

“ScottyattackedLiv.Hehadhelp.She’sfine,butwe’vegottomove,”Ravensays.Icurse,andSylvieturnstomeinalarm.

“On my way,” I say and turn the implant off.

“What happened?” Sylvie asks. I came over to help her install some scientific equipment that is way too advanced for me to understand.

“Scotty attacked Liv. He’s not working alone.” Which means Infinitum is helping him.Fuck. How the hell did that idiot hide it so well?

She takes the drill from my hand. “Go. I’ll run Liv’s blood sample and send the results to Raven. Stay safe.” Sylvie didn’t have to lie to get the sample. She told Liv she could test her blood again to make sure she didn't have the same condition as John. She had to lie and tell her she didn’t, but we’ll deal with that later.

I nod and use my enhanced speed to get to our downtown apartment in one minute. A fierce wind flies around the room when I come to a stop. Raven’s hair and beard whips around, but he doesn’t react. He’s used to the aftereffects of my abilities. “I can’t trace him,” he says without preamble.

Only Infinitum can cloak people from Raven. “What’s the plan?”

“We need to activate Liv. Luke is taking her to the safe house. We’ll get there ahead of them so I can hack into Nova. I can’t do it remotely.” We grab what we need and twenty minutes later, we make our way up north. It takes a few hours, but we pull up to the remote mountain home and Raven opens the trunk and pulls a small black box out of a case. He opens the panel next to the front door and enters a code into the screen.

Welcome, Sirflashes in green letters.

“Grab the kit and set up perimeter surveillance. I’ll tell you where in just a second,” he says. I nod and turn on my implant. Ten minutes later we’re up and running and we head down the mountain path. We pass the SUV carrying Luke and Liv on the main road right before we get to the town. We set up shop at a small roadside hotel.

“They’ll be extra vigilant so we’ll need to wait until Liv is alone,” Raven says.

“You think Luke is going to let Liv out of his sight after this?”

“Not right away, but he won’t have a choice. He owns a tech empire, he can’t hide from the world forever.”

“We need to bring Liv in. It’s the only way we can keep her safe."

“I promised Henry I’d wait.”

“He’s going to get his daughter killed,” I say, not holding back my anger.

Raven looks up at me from the monitor he was assembling. “When you have a daughter, you get an opinion. Until then, shut up and get to work.” He returns to his task with brisk movements.

I stare at him. I never knew he had a daughter. My calloused heart beats for him for a moment. If he’s not with her, she must be dead. That must be who Infinitum killed.Jesus.Talking to him about it while he’s worked up will only piss him off more. I do as he says and help him with the rest of the monitors. We work in efficient silence for a while. Then Raven lets out a sigh.

“What was her name?” I risk asking.

His back is to me, and I watch his shoulders drop. When he speaks, his voice is less harsh, but there’s still a hard edge to it. “I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but we're not talking about her. Ever. Understand?” He turns to look me in the eye and I nod. I get it. He nods back, and the tension leaves the room as we resume our set up.
