Maggie managed to continue to play hostess, making sure their food was good and their drinks were refilled, but she kept finding herself watching Zane. The way he used his hands as he spoke, the were large but had wonderfully tapered fingers, or the way his wide mouth quirked up on just one side when he was amused. She could almost feel the sparks flying between them when she caught him returning her frequent glances.

“So, how long are you staying, Dr. Savage?” Maggie asked when they had almost completed their lunch.

“Zane, please, Maggie,” he responded. She felt a little foolish about how much she liked hearing her name on his lips. “And, just today. I have clinic hours in the morning.”

“Oh, that’s too bad,” Maggie said, then heard the disappointment in her tone and tried to recover. “I’m sure Dani appreciated you coming all this way.”

Zane threw a hand up in dismissal. “It’s less than two hours and I was glad to do it. Anything for Dani.”

Maggie was surprised at the twinge she felt in her chest. She’d just met this man and he was just a friend to Dani. Her friend was wrapped up in whatever she and Levi had going on after all. She had no reason, or right for that matter, to be jealous of that casual remark of support. She wondered how she could get him to visit again. A couple of hours surrounded by other people didn’t seem to be nearly enough. She was confused by the almost panic she felt in her chest over not seeing him again.

Before she could formulate an idea, Zane came up with one all on his own. “I’d be glad to come check Lu out once she gets home, Dani – if it would make you feel better.”

One red eyebrow raised sardonically over Dani’s shinning green eyes. She didn’t miss a trick, damn it. “Well, I’m sure Uncle E would really appreciate that,” Dani purred, “if you’re sure it’s no trouble.”

“No trouble at all,” Zane said enthusiastically. “Just let me know when they spring her from the hospital.”

“I’ll keep you updated,” Dani assured him.

Eventually, Zane got up to leave saying he needed to get back to Dallas. “It’s been a pleasure meeting you, Maggie,” Zane said reaching his hand out to take her soft fingers in his again. “And please let JT know how much I enjoyed lunch.”

“You, too,” Maggie breathed, holding on to him longer than she knew was proper. “And I will. I, uh, I hope you’ll come by when you’re in town again. If, if you have time, that is,” she stuttered, feeling the warmth climbing into her face.

Zane smiled warmly at her invitation. “I’m sure I will. I look forward to it.”

“Well, we’d better run, Mags.” Dani said, her head on a swivel between her two friends. Maggie shook herself out of the trance she’d fallen in and hugged Dani tight. “I’ll let you know when he’s going to be back,” Dani whispered in her ear conspiratorially as they embraced.

Maggie tightened her hold in silent thanks. “You don’t be a stranger now! I expect to see you back in here soon and we are scheduling girls’ night as soon as Lu is

home again.”

Dani winked at her. “You’d better believe it! Talk to you soon.”

And just like that, the first man she had felt any interest in for a long time was gone. She fervently hoped it wasn’t the last she would see of him.
