A few hours later, JT was on his way home happier than he expected to be after being forced to attend a shower. Granted, the shower part was tedious as fuck with all the oohhhing and ahhhing over gifts and prissy little hors d’oeuvres that wouldn’t be enough to keep a bunny alive, but he had met a woman. She was obviously part of Cece’s Dallas contingent with her blonde curls trailing artistically down her back and her perfect make-up. He thought she might be one of Cece’s Tri-Delt sisters. She looked the part. He really hadn’t had any expectation that she’d agree to go out with him, but he was bored enough to give it a try.

“Hey there, darlin’” JT said, flashing his trademark grin. “I’m assuming you’re on the bride’s side of today’s shindig. Don’t think Rick could have kept a pretty little thing like you hidden away.”

“Well, well, aren’t you a charmer,” she responded, turning to him from her plate of little sandwiches. “And who might you be?”

“JT, friend of the groom from Gladewater,” he said, throwing something on his plate, not breaking eye contact. God, she smelled delicious and expensive.

Her attention sharpened when she heard where he was from. She schooled her expression and kept the flirtatiousness in her voice. “Didn’t know they grew them so big and tall out there in the country,” the woman purred. “Maybe I should have been checking out some small towns instead of hanging in Dallas all the time. What do you do for work out there, JT from Gladewater?"

"I own a cafe with my sister. It's called Common Grounds. I'm the chef. She runs the business side." He popped a canape in his mouth never looking away from her large blue eyes.

Her eyes widened at the mention of his business. He wondered if she was something of a chef groupie. They were out there. This little party was suddenly looking up.

She offered him a perfectly manicured hand. She couldn't believe her luck in running into the little mouse's brother at this boring party. "I'm Brittany, by the way," she offered. "Sorority sister to the bride. And some kind of cousin as well, I think." She gave a self-deprecating laugh. "I can never keep up with those things."

Just as JT was about to really turn on the charm and make a move, the bride’s mother called everyone loudly to order for some silly game. He rolled his eyes and caught her doing the same.

“Give me your phone,” she said, putting down her plate. He handed it to her obediently and she put her number in his contacts. “There, JT from Gladewater. Now you can call and ask me out for next Saturday.” She blew him a little kiss and was moving away from him before he could respond. JT grinned to himself. City women sure moved more quickly than country girls, that was for sure. He may have to amend his opinion of couple's showers.
