“Of course, we’re getting dressed now, but please reconsider,” Dani pleaded. “We had this all worked out for you two with the new clinic plans. Between all of us, especially if you moved here, we could keep her safe. Don’t do this.”

Zane didn’t acknowledge her pleas. “Thanks, Dani. You don’t know how much I appreciate you. Just tell her I’m sorry, so sorry.”

Dani heard a catch in his voice before the line went dead. She dropped the phone on the bed and fisted her hands in her curls in frustration. Levi came to sit next to her on the bed and put an arm around her. She leaned heavily into his shoulder and he stroked her hair. “Good Lord, save me from men with testosterone poisoning.”

Levi smiled and gave her a kiss on top of the head. Testosterone poisoning was Dani’s diagnosis for everything stupid men did. He had to admit they could do some stupid stuff around the women they loved if they thought they were keeping their women safe. “It’ll all work out, babe. I’ve seen the way they are together. He won’t be able to stay away from her for long.”

She blew out a heavy breath. “I hope so. Maggie is going to be completely gutted over this and, lucky me, I’m the one who gets to break the news.”

Levi kissed her again and drug her to her feet. “C’mon. Get dressed and let’s get out of here. It’s a long drive to Dallas. I’ll buzz JT while you’re getting ready.”

She looked at him skeptically. "Part of me doesn't even want to tell him what's happened until we get her home."

"Aw now, sugar, you know you can't do that. He'd completely lose it if he found out you knew and didn't tell him."

"I just know Maggie won't want him there right now. She's going to be going through enough and, if JT is there, she's going to be worried about him as well. She doesn't need that. It's going to be enough to deal with what she's going to be feeling herself."

"I'll tell him she's going to be fine and we're on her way there. He can pass the word on to their mama and get things ready at home for her."

"You're the best, you know that?" she said and hugged him tight, hoping to gather some strength from him so she could be strong for Maggie.

Twenty minutes later they were in Pearl speeding down the dark interstate towards the city and two broken friends.
