Zane blew out a breath and took a long pull on his beer. What could he say?

“It’s kind of complicated, sir,” Zane answered.

“That’s a load of horseshit, right there,” Eustace said boisterously. “Stuff’s only complicated if you make it that way. I thought you loved the gal?”

“I do!” Zane agreed, “but she got hurt because of things I’ve done in the past. I don’t want her to be hurt again.”

“Seems to me,” Eustace said, rubbing a hand over his balding head, “you’re hurting her now to avoid a possible hurt in the future. How’s that make any sense?”

“No, I...”Zane started to defend himself but stopped. He thought about what Eustace had just said. If Maggie was even half as miserable as he was right now, he was hurting her plenty. And for what? For something that might happen? What if something else happened to Maggie because he wasn’t with her?

“Seems to me, playing ‘what if’ is just an excuse to not take the bull by the horns in the here and now,′ Eustace continued when he saw the wheels turning in Zane’s head.

“I lost eleven years, man, don’t waste a good thing while you’ve got it,” Levi added.

Zane suddenly felt a weight lifted off of his shoulders. He had the power to make Maggie happy again and take away her hurt. He'd do everything in his power to make her happy again and protect her by being with her. He didn’t know what might happen in the future, but he knew what he could do right now. He grabbed Eustace’s hand and shook it hard. “Thank you, sir. I’m not going to waste anther minute on ‘what if’.” He dug his car keys out of his pocket. “Levi, I’ll see you at the party tomorrow.”

Levi gave him a small salute as he backed the Audi out of the driveway and sped off. “That was a fine piece of wisdom there, Eustace,” Levi said, smiling at the man.

“Sometimes it pays to be an old man,” Eustace said. “You can spout just about anything and make it sound like something profound.” He chuckled. “C’mon, son, more banana pudding for us!”
