Maggie turned down the music and motioned to her friend to follow her. “Let’s go have some tea and make a game plan. We’ll have you sorted in no time.”

“What would I do without you, Mags?” Dani asked for what must have been the millionth time in their long friendship.

“I have no idea,” Maggie responded as she always did, leading the way to the kitchen.

Maggie sat Dani down on a red vinyl chair in the kitchen, an antique she had saved when she had remodeled her grandmother’s house, and went to the fridge to grab the pitcher of tea that was always there. As Maggie poured her a glass, Dani gasped. “What the fuck is that?”

“Dani, mouth!” Maggie chided but didn’t try to suppress the huge smile that came over her. “And what do you think it is?” Maggie asked, fluttering her fingers in front of Dani’s wide green eyes.

“I think it’s a fu...uh, freaking engagement ring! When did this happen?”

“Last night,” Maggie said, beaming. “Zane came over, said Eustace made him realize he didn't want to lose any more time with me, and then he proposed!”

Dani gave her a knowing look. “That uncle of mine is like the Texan Yoda, I swear! He opens his mouth and you’re powerless to stop yourself from doing just what he thinks you should do! I’m so glad my plan worked, though I didn’t see the proposal coming so quickly. I’d better tell Uncle E to pull back some of his mojo next time!”

Maggie just grinned over her tea. “Yesterday morning, I never would have believed I’d not only be back with the man I love but engaged to him as well! What a difference twenty-four hours makes. And I can't believe he's only been in my life for six months. It feels like I've known him forever.”

“And, by the way, you are in big trouble, missy!” Maggie added, coming out of her romantic reveries.

“Me? You should be thanking me. I’m the one who kicked his ass and drug him back to Gladewater!”

“And what else did you do that you forgot to tell me about while you were doing the behind kicking?”

Dani smirked at her inability to even say ‘ass’. “Let’s see. I made him horrible coffee, but that should only make him appreciate you more.” She tapped a finger to her chin in contemplation.

“The clinic? Did that completely escape your memory?”

“Oh, yeah. The clinic. Told you about that, did he?”

“Of course, he did! The question is, why didn’t you? You’ve obviously been working on it a while. How could you not tell me?”

Dani had the courtesy to look chagrined. “I really wanted to, Mags, but I wasn’t sure I could get him to agree. I didn’t want to get your hopes up if I couldn’t make it happen. We only just finalized it yesterday. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before, but it’s great, right?”

Maggie had to smile. “It’s more than great. I can’t believe you managed it. It’s a wonderful idea. The community is going to be so lucky to have the three of you to care for them.”

Dani grabbed her hand and held on tight. “You know I’m not religious, but we’re awfully blessed, aren’t we?”

Maggie gripped her oldest friend’s hand tightly. “We really are. Now, come on. Let’s get you organized and packed. We have to start getting ready for Mama’s extravaganza soon.”

Dani gave an Olympic worthy eye roll. “I love your mama, Maggie, you know I do but...”

“She’s so extra!” They said together and giggled like the schoolgirls they had been not so long ago.
