Suddenly, the mighty Dominic Dane, who was about two heads taller than me, looked like I’d smacked him in the face. The green of his eyes lightened, and his shoulders fell, as if he felt sorry.

Then, he shook his head.

“Go home, Teddybear.” And he turned around and walked to his office without another look my way.

I hate you! I called after him in my mind. I hated him so much my fists shook.

How dare he? I’d worked so hard for this, damn it. I’d busted my ass for a chance, and now he was going to take that away from me? For what?

Was it because I’d talked to him that day in the janitor’s closet? Was it because I’d been too friendly, too insistent that he freaking smile?

Ugh, I wanted to claw my own eyes out right now.

The door of the Chief’s office opened, and when he saw me there, he froze for a second, too. Meanwhile I still hadn’t moved a single inch.

“Talk to Mathews. He’ll explain everything,” was all he said to me before he strode down the hallway and to the other side of the office, never giving me a chance to reply.

Damn you, Dominic Dane.
