“And her blue eyes,” Drake said. “And your grandmother has the same blue eyes.”

Abby crushed the phone to her chest and let the tears fall.

Drake’s gaze met Cassie’s.

“Let’s go,” she said softly.

He nodded, closed the back door and climbed into the driver’s seat.

The drive back to town was a silent one with a few hiccups and sniffles.

Drake pulled into the sheriff’s department parking lot and shifted into park. He turned in his seat. “Where should we go? We can’t keep Abby here, and my room at the B&B is too small.”

“Let’s take her home to the ranch,” Cassie said. “Richard would like the company, and it’s about time he met you.” Cassie smiled at Drake, making his heart beat faster.

“Are you sure?” Drake asked.

Cassie nodded. “As sure as you are.”

“That’s pretty darned sure.” He grinned and drove out of the parking lot, heading for the Double D Ranch.

“I’d like to have a moment with your brother when we get there,” Drake said.

Cassie laughed. “Go easy on him. He’s trying hard to fill my father’s shoes.”

Drake loved the sound of her laughter and how happy it made him feel, despite the fact two more lives had been lost.

Whatever happened, Drake wanted to be with this woman and make her as happy as she was making him.
