“See you soon, honey.” The phone slipped from my hand, but I couldn’t give two shits about where it landed. If she wanted fun, I’d do my damnedest to give her all the fun she could handle.

“Uncle Simon,” two high-pitched voices squealed as I walked through the front door. I dropped to my knees onto the tile floor as I entered the foyer, and opened my arms in time for two pint-sized torpedoes to barrel into my chest, knocking the breath out of me.

“How are my girls?” I wrapped my arms around Ava and Emma and stood, lifting them with me as they giggled. Ava gave my cheek a sticky kiss like only a three-year-old could while Emma peered at Addison from over my shoulder with the curious eyes of a kindergartener.

“Who’s that? She’s tall,” Emma asked, tugging my shirt collar so I’d look at her.

“This is my friend, Addison, baby. Can you say hi?”

“No.” She wiggled, and I lowered her down, watching as she pumped her little legs and ran in the other direction. “Mommy. Uncle Simon is here with a girl.”

“I say hi. I say hi.” Ava patted my cheek and waved.

“Hi there,” Addison said, reaching out to boop Ava on the nose. She smiled and batted her finger away, then squirmed to get out of my arms.

“Want to color?”

“Definitely. Will you show me where your crayons are?”

“No.” Ava took off in the same direction as Emma, and I turned around, grasping Addison’s waist and pulling her flush against me.

“Think I’m going to make a better first impression with your sister?” she asked, reaching out and putting her palm on my cheek. I took it in my other hand and brought it to my lips, enjoying how her eyes got wider as she tracked the movement. These were not the eyes of someone who only wanted to have fun, but now wasn’t the time to argue.

“Oh yeah, and I’m sure the girls will like you more than me by the end of the night.”

“And if not, I may have candy in my bag. I’m not above bribery,” she said, leaning close enough for me to smell her hair.

“What do I have to do to get a kiss before we go to the kitchen?” I asked, nuzzling her neck and letting my hand skim underneath her cowl-neck sweater. The smooth skin of her waist was hot to the touch—her body made for all the wicked things I wanted to do. Seeing her dressed in power suits and dresses with fuck-me heels had my dick straining to get closer, but the simplicity of jeans and a sweater made me physically unable to keep my hands to myself.

I’d done more than my fair share of idiotic things through the years: letting my father control my life, dating the she-devil, giving up when my graphic design business tanked, not spending enough time with Nana and Beth. And those were the things I could summon while Addison’s body pressed against mine. But she felt too good, too right. Her fingers traced my arms then threaded into my hair, making me desperate to lock us in the nearest coat closet and rut against her like a fucking caveman.

Fuck.

My brain had short-circuited. The electrons or neutrons or goddamn protons were misfiring, causing the part of my brain controlling rational thought to shut down. She wanted to have fun, and I wanted to mark every inch of her sweet body with my tongue and teeth so there’d be no doubt who she belonged to.

“Lucky for you, you never have to ask,” she said, pulling on the short strands of my hair. A low growl slipped past my lips before I could rein myself in, and I locked my lips with hers.

She was soft everywhere, but her lips were silk, so pliable against mine. I kissed her with tender strokes and teasing licks, needing this to differ from the night in the library. She rewarded me with a breathy moan, so I took a little more, sipping from her like she was an exquisite bottle of the finest red wine. Overcome with the need to savor every moment, every touch, every sound, I cupped her cheeks and laid claim to her.

Her arms tightened around my neck, and she leaned into me with an unspoken challenge to kiss her deeper, take her harder, and mark her body with my lips.

“Fuck, Simon,” she whispered, her eyes blazing with lust.

A subtle throat-clearing pulled me out of her orbit, and I turned to see Will rubbing the back of his neck and staring at the floor.

“Hey, Will.” Addison stayed close to my side, and I tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and kissed the corner of her lips before giving him my full attention.

“Hey, man. Got a minute?”

“Yeah. First, let me introduce you to my girlfriend, Addison.”

She took a step toward Will, extending her hand with a practiced smile. These last weeks, I’d come to recognize her different smiles, and this one said her guard was up. But when her lips aligned to mine and her guard slipped, she looked weightless. She looked like forever. She’d become the realest thing in my life—how could I keep up the charade?

“Hi, Addison. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Will said, slipping his hand in hers and shaking politely. “Beth’s in the kitchen if you wouldn’t mind excusing us for a minute.”

“Of course. Very nice to meet you too, Will.” She pointed in the direction the girls ran, and I nodded, wondering what the hell had gotten into my brother-in-law. He looked downright uncomfortable, staring at the floor and rubbing one foot over the tile like he was trying to get out a phantom scuff mark.

“Is everything okay with Beth? With the girls?” I asked, my mind immediately going to the worst.
